Nika
Meet Nika, a beautiful sable girl with soulful eyes and a heart that is wide open, even after a rough start.
Nika came to GSRA in an emergency. She and her eight puppies needed help fast, and when we learned she had stopped eating and was not acting like herself, we stepped in right away. A trip to the vet revealed she needed surgery for an internal issue, and our board did not hesitate to bring her into the rescue and get her the care she had been missing. She was spayed during that same surgery and is now recovering comfortably in her foster home. She is heartworm positive and will be treated as part of her GSRA care, but she feels better every single day.
Here is the thing about Nika. She really is a blank slate. Her first family loved her in their own way but did not give her the exposure and gentle handling that helps a young dog blossom, so she is learning about the world a little later than most. And honestly, she is delighting in every minute of it. She soaks up affection like she has been waiting her whole life for someone to notice her.
Nika is shy for about thirty seconds. Give her a kind word and a treat, let her sniff you and decide you are wonderful, and she is all wags from there. She adores attention and has greeted every visitor to her foster home like a friend she simply had not met yet. Her previous owner described her as gentle and patient with his young children, and she is learning that other dogs can be friends too, with calm and proper introductions.
She is housebroken, sleeps quietly through the night in her crate, and already knows how to sit. She is whip smart and eager, which means she is going to soak up training beautifully once she has a person to show her the ropes. She is strong on leash for now and still figuring out what toys are even for, which gives her future family the fun job of teaching her how to play.
Nika does have some separation anxiety. She is not destructive, but she will bark and pace when left alone, so she will do best with a family who can ease her into alone time gently and help her trust that people always come back.
What Nika needs now is what she has never quite had: a patient person, a little structure, and the steady reassurance that she is safe. Give her that, and this sweet girl is going to bloom into the devoted companion she was always meant to be.
