I've found my furever family!

~6 years old. Good with older considerate children. Not good with dogs or cats. Apartment appropriate. Ginger is THE German Shepherd Dog for those who want a small shepherd. We think that Ginger's grandfather might have been a Sheltie because she is small and has some long fur. Also her coat is very soft without the coarse outer coat of most GSDs and she doesn't shed like a GSD. But she looks and acts like a GSD and is a wonderful and attentive companion. Ginger is so adorable that everywhere I take her people ask if she is young and can't believe that she is 6 years old. Ginger is gentle and very attached to her person and will follow you around the house. She loves to go on walks and I try to take her morning and evening. She also loves to play with a toy and dash around the yard. She is very smart and has learned many new commands. She will ride in the car but wants to be up front with her person. It is best that she be tied in the back seat for her safety and yours. She sometimes whines when riding and heavy traffic makes her nervous see how smart she is! Several months ago Ginger's owner became ill and died. No one in the family could take her but they entrusted her to a rescue organization. She went to several foster homes but didn't get along well with other dogs in those homes so she should probably be an only dog. She has been with me since October 4th and has really settled in. She has learned to walk on a leash but needs a prong collar for control as she will still pull unless corrected. When we are out walking she will ignore some dogs but others she will bark and jump at. I've been correcting her with the prong collar and she will need this for a while. She has some separation anxiety but has not been destructive when left alone. Like most dogs she would love to be in a home where someone was around during the day but I think that with some more work the separation anxiety will decrease. She is not food aggressive&mdashI can take her food away while she is eating and remove toys from her mouth. Her previous owner must have allowed her on the furniture and on the bed because she has hopped up on the sofa when I wasn't in the room. However she quickly learned not to get on the furniture while I was looking! Like many GSDs Ginger needs to be reminded that her owner is the &ldquopack leader.&rdquo Some simple rules and routines will give her a sense of structure and encourage good behavior. She is not a barker but will bark when someone comes to the door. She has a pretty good growl. She knows: Sit stay down off leave it and come. Ginger would be a wonderful companion for anyone.
