When I adopted Bentley, I did it with a very specific goal. I wanted to give an older dog—one that may not have had the easiest start—a life full of love, comfort, and happiness. I wanted him to know what it felt like to be truly cherished for the rest of his life.
Unfortunately, over the past year, Bentley has developed chronic allergies and also had to undergo emergency abdominal surgery after swallowing one of his toys.
About Bentley:
- 9 years old
- Neutered, Healthy aside from his allergies, up to date on vaccinations
- house trained and well-mannered
- loves care rides
- knows basic commands
His personality:
Bentley is, without question, the biggest cuddle bug I've ever met. If you're sitting on the couch, he'll be right next to you—or trying to-- he always misses and lands on you weighing nearly 90 pounds. He absolutely thrives on love and attention and just wants to be close to his person.
Like most German Shepherds, he's very vocal. He'll happily "talk" to you throughout the day and has a personality that's impossible not to love.
Bentley is also completely obsessed with toys. Because he spent part of his life as a stray, I truly believe toys became something incredibly valuable to him. Unfortunately, he doesn't know when to stop. He'll chew them until they're destroyed, swallow pieces if given the chance (which is what led to his emergency surgery), or even play so hard that he'll make his gums bleed. Because of this, I don't leave toys out for him, and any toy time has to be closely supervised.
With other dogs:
Bentley hasn't had a lot of opportunities to socialize with other dogs. On leash, he can be reactive, but once he's off leash, he generally loses interest and peacefully goes about his business. I'd still recommend slow, controlled introductions with any resident dogs.
With children:
Bentley has never shown aggression toward people, but I want to be completely honest. If someone is waving around a stuffed animal, rope, blanket, or anything he mistakes for a toy, he gets incredibly excited and may jump or accidentally nip while trying to grab it. Because of this, I think he'd do best in a home without very young children, or with older kids who understand how to interact with him safely.
