Meet Squirrel - This is an initial bio from the assessment. As she settles in her foster home we will update the bio to reflect her true nature as it shines through.
Squirrel is a beautiful black-and-tan German Shepherd, estimated to be 3 to 5 years old, who is looking for a patient, understanding home that will help her learn to trust and feel safe.
Squirrel is a smaller, elegant Shepherd with a light-colored head, a decent coat, and good teeth, though she is a bit thin. It appears she has had at least one litter in the past. Her heartworm status is unknown, and while we hope for the best, it is possible she spent time living outdoors. Despite this, she is healthy, mobile, and alert.
Squirrel is shy and timid when first meeting people, but she bonds more quickly than she initially lets on. She clearly looks to familiar handlers for reassurance and has started coming to the front of her kennel seeking attention from the shelter staff. During her assessment, she was nervous but allowed full handling without any resistance or aggression. She will gently take treats and shows no signs of food guarding.
With other dogs, Squirrel did well. She met an older female dog politely on leash, then walked calmly beside her off leash in the yard. While she was curious about her surroundings and looked for a way out, she remained relaxed around the other dog and even seemed more comfortable when staying close to her. She has not been cat-tested due to shelter restrictions.
Squirrel does not appear to have had formal training and pulls a bit on leash, especially when anxious. When overwhelmed, she tends to sit down and “shrink” rather than act out. She is food motivated and intelligent, and with time, structure, and kindness, she is likely to blossom.
From our initial take, Squirrel would do best in an adoptive home with a securely fenced yard (5–6 feet recommended), careful supervision at first, and at least one confident, friendly dog to help her feel more settled.
This gentle girl has had a rough start, but she is clearly willing to try. With patience, consistency, and love, Squirrel has the potential to become a loyal and deeply devoted companion.
