DEXTER ~2-3 years old. Good with older considerate childrenand large dogs. Not good with small dogs or cats. Requires a fenced yard. GSRA adopts to residents of VA NC and SC only Hi my name is Dexter and I am 95lbs of pure friendly! I have heard German Shepherd Dogs can be aloof? I don't know the meaning of the word! In my three years on the planet I have never met a person (including young people) I haven't liked! Of course I can always like them better if they skritch me behind the ears!Dexter is as loveable as he is good looking! He is house-broken crate-trained not a barker will not get on furniture without invitation does not mess with people food does not jump up inappropriately or pull on his leash. He entered our foster care with a crate but swiftly earned 24hr. free roam of the house. He is calm and quiet through the night. He has had limited training but is very smart and excited to learn new skills. His intense people-focus would make him a great candidate for advanced training with a motivated owner but his outgoing personality makes him a poor choice as a watchdog. He needs daily moderate exercise (walks&mdashhe will Heel on lead) and could happily become a jogging buddy if invited. Dexter's tail has been docked following an episode of uncontrolled chewing. Food allergies are the suspected cause. He is currently on an anti-itch medication (Apoquel) and a restricted diet. Further evaluation to determine underlying causes will be indicated. Potential allergies may require ongoing management.Dexter is usually a people-pleaser but he does sometimes exhibit an independent streak. He also has a frisky side and when he is feeling perky he tends to want to mouth dogs and people. He has excellent control and a gentle soul but he is large and his playful mouthing could be misunderstood by some people or other dogs. He loves to rough-house when given the chance! Small dogs would be a poor fit. Given his size and occasional bursts of exuberance he is not a good choice for homes with small children or unsteady seniors. Dexter has a strong prey drive so no cats. He is great around strangers and good around most large dogs&mdashbut not all. Very occasionally he will meet a dog to whom he takes an instant dislike so he needs some social supervision.Dexter would do well as the only dog in a family who could give him a lot of attention and a sense of purpose. Someone working from home would be ideal. He would also be a lovely addition to a family of multiple dogs with compatible personalities. In either case he really needs to be around people to thrive. He is a charming dog. It is hard to spend any time around him and not fall in love!
