Meet Bandit, a 2-3 year old Belgian Malinois with a heart full of love and a past that has shaped him into the sensitive, affectionate dog he is today. This sweet, gentle boy is friendly but takes a little time to warm up to new people, which is understandable given all he has been through in the last few months. Once he trusts you, he becomes a true Velcro dog, following you everywhere and craving affection.
Bandit’s story is one of resilience. He was originally adopted through a “clear out the shelter” program, but he ran away and was later found lying in a ditch. A kind woman picked him up, but her own dogs were not welcoming. She brought him to a vet, who traced his microchip back to the shelter. The original adopters were contacted but didn’t want him back. When they arrived at the shelter, Bandit panicked and hid behind the woman who had rescued him. Seeing his fear, she refused to return him to the adopters, and that’s when Blue Moon Shepherd Rescue stepped in.
When Bandit arrived at the rescue, he was terrified. He flinched at sudden movements, paced constantly, and had scars that hinted at past abuse. But despite his fear, he ran straight into the arms of his rescuer as if pleading for help. It was then they realized he wasn’t a sable German Shepherd—he was a Belgian Malinois, a breed known for its intelligence, sensitivity, and strong work ethic.
Over the past several weeks, Bandit has slowly started to come out of his shell. He has learned to trust, offers kisses freely, and even rolls over for belly rubs. However, he still reacts to sharp tones and commands by tensing up, waiting for punishment. For now, he’s simply learning that he is safe, and he follows his people everywhere.
Bandit requires an experienced adopter familiar with the Malinois or German Shepherd breed. While he is tolerant of other dogs, he would likely prefer to be the only pet. He has a high prey drive, so a home without cats or small animals is a must.
He is crate trained and finds comfort in his crate, using it as his safe space. He loves car rides and enjoys adventures, but he cannot be off-leash unless in a securely fenced area—his instinct to chase is strong. He thrives in a calm, quiet home with someone who is home often and can provide him with both structure and affection. Harsh tones and loud environments make him uneasy, so he needs an adopter who can be both gentle and firm.
Despite his difficult past, Bandit remains incredibly affectionate and loyal. The bond he forms with his person will be like no other. He will stay by your side, always watching you, always ready to love and be loved in return. With patience, kindness, and understanding, Bandit will flourish into the devoted companion he was meant to be.
Bandit is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention.
