Adoption Process

Bestfriends

So You Want To Adopt Your New Best Friend

We’re so glad you’re considering adoption through German Shepherd Rescue & Adoption (GSRA). Welcoming a rescue dog into your home is a deeply rewarding experience—but it’s also a serious commitment. Our adoption process is designed to ensure each dog is placed in a safe, loving, and well-matched home.
If you're looking for a "same-day adoption," our rescue may not be the best fit. But if you're ready to invest in a thoughtful, meaningful process—we're here to help you find your new best friend.

Where We Adopt

Please note, GSRA only processes applications from residents of:

  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Virginia

If you live outside these states, we recommend connecting with a rescue organization closer to home.

Our Application Process

1. Complete Online Application

  • Pay the $35 application fee

  • Then complete and submit your application

✳️ Note: This fee is refundable if your application is denied during the initial screening.

2. Application Review
Our volunteer team will review your submission for eligibility and fit.

3. Veterinary Reference Check
We will contact your vet to confirm your history of responsible pet ownership.

4. Phone Interview
A member of our team will speak with you to learn more about your home, lifestyle, and expectations.

5. Home Visit
A volunteer will visit your home to ensure it’s a safe, appropriate environment for a rescue dog.

⏳ Timeline: This process typically takes several weeks. Our dedicated volunteers handle each step carefully, and we appreciate your patience!

After Approval

Once your application is approved:

  • You’ll be invited to attend GSRA adoption events to meet available dogs.

  • An adoption coordinator will work with you to identify dogs in our rescue who may be a great match for your family and lifestyle.

  • Foster parents make the final decision about whether a dog is placed with a particular family, as they know the dog's personality and needs best.

  • If a match is found, a trial visit will be scheduled.

  • No dog goes home at the first meeting—we require everyone to take at least a night to think it over before making a final decision.

Courtesy Listings (CL Dogs)

Dogs marked with (CL) on our website are Courtesy Listings. These dogs:

  • Remain in the care of their current owners, not in GSRA foster care

  • Are Private Adoptions, not managed by GSRA

  • Reach out directly to the contact listed on the dog’s page for more information

Important Reminders

🐾 No same-day adoptions at events—even by approved applicants.

⏱️ Dogs must be in foster care for a minimum of 14 days before becoming eligible for adoption.

🐶 Browse our current rescue dogs under Available Dogs and Coming Soon.

🏡 Once matched, we encourage visits to the dog’s foster home to see them in their current environment. Alternative arrangements are possible based on the foster's discretion.

🔒 Foster parents are not in direct contact with applicants until after full approval.

Multiple Adoptions Policy

We love our repeat adopters! However, to ensure a smooth transition for each dog:

  • GSRA requires a 3-month waiting period between adoptions.

  • Exceptions may be considered by our Board of Directors on a case-by-case basis.
