Shelters—both locally and across the country—are experiencing unprecedented overcrowding. Sadly, many wonderful pets lose their lives simply because there are not enough adopters or available spaces. While we wish we could help every dog in need, the number of dogs far exceeds the resources currently available.
Whenever possible, we encourage families to explore every option before making the difficult decision to rehome a pet. Shelters can be frightening and stressful environments, filled with unfamiliar sounds, sights, and other anxious animals. There is no guarantee of safety or survival once a dog enters a shelter.
Your pet looks to you as their family and source of security. We understand that life can be unpredictable, but we ask that rehoming be considered only after all other reasonable alternatives have been exhausted.
GSRA offers a Courtesy Listing Service to help owners thoughtfully and safely rehome their dogs. This service is available only for German Shepherd Dogs located in NC, SC, and VA.
By completing the Courtesy Listing form, GSRA will share your dog on both our website and Adopt-a-Pet for a period of 60 days. If additional time is needed, extensions may be requested. Over the years, many dogs have successfully found loving new homes through this service.
If you would like us to consider your dog for GSRA’s rescue program, a Courtesy Listing must be submitted prior to reaching out to us. Once the listing has been completed, you may contact our email team at gsra@gsdrescue.org and include a link to your dog’s listing. While every submission is carefully reviewed, completion of a Courtesy Listing does not guarantee acceptance into rescue.
If your dog is outside NC, SC or VA, we kindly ask that you use Rehome by Adopt a Pet, a program created by the Petco Foundation. This service allows pets to move directly from their current home to a new adopter, avoiding the stress of shelter placement and the risks associated with classified listings. Rehome provides guidance throughout the rehoming process and shares your pet's profile with thousands of potential adopters through Adopt-a-Pet.com.
