Rocky the Southern Gentleman
Rocky came to GSRA from an owner who became ill and could not care for him any more. He is one of the calmest, best behaved dogs I’ve ever fostered or met: a true Southern Gentleman. Rocky is a wonderful companion and is gentle and undemanding. My neighborhood is full of people and dogs and Rocky is good with men, women, children, and other dogs—even small ones. I have three cats and he simply ignores them, both inside and out. He is very interested in being petted and enjoys being told how handsome he is—which happens every time we meet someone on a walk. He is housebroken and uses a dog door to go outside. He has good leash manners and rides well in the car. My yard has a standard 4 ft. fence and he hasn’t made any effort to jump it or get out.

Rocky has some low-level medical issues that require attention. Rocky has a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) which means his body doesn’t make a certain enzyme and so he needs a special dry food that is sprinkled with a spoonful of enzyme supplement. He is stable on this treatment. Related to this condition is a skin issue—his skin can become flaky and itchy with a smell. To treat this he needs a bath with medicated shampoo at least once a week, however, he doesn’t mind a bath at all. I’ve been washing him in the back yard and it doesn’t take too long—around a half hour followed by a walk to dry off. When he gets a bath he also needs to have his ears cleaned with a special solution. Like many GSDs his age, he may have some arthritis in his hips; this doesn’t seem to bother him on walks or on stairs, but he doesn’t like to sit.

If you are looking for a ferocious guard dog, Rocky is not your guy. However, if you want a sweet, gentle companion who will love you forever, has a “laid-back” nature, and who you can take just about anywhere, then you should meet Rocky.
