RILEY ~3-4 years old. Good with older, considerate kids, dogs and cats. Needs a companion animal and fenced yard.
GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.
Meet Riley, a classic black and tan girl who is 3-4 years old. She is petite, weighing only 52 pounds, but with proper nutrition, she will likely grow to be a healthy 60 pounds. Before being rescued, she had a shaky start in life, accounting for her anxiety and cautious introductions to new people. Riley really comes to life when she is around other dogs. She loves canine companions, and it will be crucial for her to have at least one confident doggie sibling in her new home to show her the ropes, help her adjust, and serve as a playmate. She also is good with cats and loves it when they accept her invitation to play.
Speaking of playing, Riley is fun to watch with her toys. One of her favorite activities is throwing them in the air to see where they land. She is housetrained, but crate training is a work in progress. She is fine with a leash for the purpose of going outside to potty, but she is fearful of being leashed for a neighborhood walk. Overcoming this fear will require a patient and loving adopter who will work with her to realize that taking leisurely strolls is not only fun, but also a great way to explore. In her former life, Riley was not taught any commands. However, she is a smart cookie and is more than capable of learning basic obedience once she becomes comfortable with her new family.
She has a lot of energy, so a fenced yard would be ideal to allow her to run freely and safely. Car rides are becoming easier for her — once she realizes she is not being taken somewhere she doesn’t want to go. At bedtime, she is trustworthy as long as she is contained and allowed to peacefully sleep on the floor alongside her foster siblings. Initially, to ease her anxiety and alleviate her fear of crate confinement, Riley will need a human who is home a lot. Once this sweet girl’s personality emerges, it is a sight to behold and well worth the time and effort!
