German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium
Bear - 3 1/2 years old. Would be a good only dog or with a low key female. Not good with children or cats. Just like the canine hero Mr. Rocky Dog in Dean Koontz's, Dark Rivers of the Heart, Mr. Bear dog rarely looks behind him, "perhaps he associates the dwindling highway behind him with the past. He has good reason not to dwell on the past." Bear is a very special dog that needs a special loving home. Not to dwell on the past too much, but Bear spent the first 3 years of his life chained to a tree. He was released from the chain on November 7th and our boy has not looked back. The trainer describes him as a very confident, yet dominant dog. Bear was able to overcome his past and now he is ready to live life in the present. Unfortunately, there are a few issues that Bear has not let go of and that will take time. So, instead of you deciding if Bear is the right dog for you, we need to decide if you are the right human for Bear! Bear needs a confident, yet gentle leader. Once Bear trusts his human, he will do ANYTHING for you. This confident, yet gentle leader cannot feel sorry for Bear and his past or be swayed by his EXTREME cuteness. We call Bear "Just a Sniggalo" (go ahead and hum the song, you know you want to) because he loves to snuggle, but Bear requires rules and structure. Remember I said that Bear is a confident dog? Once you are his people, he will love you and protect you with everything he has. He needs a leader that teaches him that you have his back so he can relax. Bear wants to have canine companions, he just doesn't know how to read body language and therefore does not always react appropriately. If he goes to a home with another dog, that dog must be a female and you must be prepared to keep them separate for an extended period of time as trust is built. Bear's foster can explain all of this to you. Bear would be Happy with a cat companion and we believe one day he would be fine with kids. Because of his protectiveness, we and the behaviorist feel that he cannot handle a home with kids yet. He would love his kid, but we are not sure how he would handle the friends of his kid. He may even side with the kid instead of the parent in a discipline issue! I do not mean to paint a negative picture of Bear. He is wonderful. He is sweet and cuddly and super smart. He needs a home that will commit to training and helping him learn he doesn't always have to defend himself. This will be a very slow process. Bear would like a home with a porch and a yard. Bear loves to be outside and enjoys the screened in porch in his foster home. He craves routine and loves walks. Are you the person that can give Bear the home he deserves? If you think you may be, then fill out an app and talk to Bear's foster.
