Hi! My name is Duke and when I first got to the rescue, I saw a doctor and they said that I had heart worms, hook worms, and Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD). Because of all this, I am a little underweight, have patches of hair missing from my back and tail, and need to build up some muscle in my back legs and hips. But that doesn't bother me…my motto is "Don't Worry, Be Happy"

Everywhere I go I find friends. I'm quiet when people come to the door, but am quick to greet them with kisses and wags once the door is open. The only one who doesn't seem to want to be my friend is my fur foster sister, Priti (a cat), who ignores me. Sometimes I can't take being ignored and can't help but let her know that I am here, but my barking just makes her run away. I simply don't understand why she doesn't want to play with me?

I have been told I am a perfect gentleman when we're out in public. My foster mommy and daddy have taken me to a whole bunch of different places...the pet store to get toys (yea!), downtown Hillsborough when they went out to lunch (they brought a treat for me), and running other errands. They say that I do really well, but that I sometimes get excited by other dogs. They give me a "time out" so that I can "collect myself" where I sit quietly and focus on them (and I get a treat!)

My foster mom and dad also think that I eat well and am very patient while they are preparing my meals. Sometimes, though, I don't want to eat in the kitchen, so I pick up my bowl and relocate to a softer, carpeted surface where I can lay down and relax to eat.

FROM MY FOSTER MOM…
Duke has only been with us a short time, but we continue to learn new things about him daily and his antics make us laugh. He is very sweet, very loving and very laid back. He is content just to be with his person/people. He loves the indoors, but enjoys going for a walk/exploring the outside with his people, and he especially loves going for car rides!

Duke's indoor manners are really very good, which is excellent since he does not like to be crated. He can be a bit "nosey" and let his nose get into things like the trash, but as long as there is no temptation, he will not mess up anything and he doesn't chew things that aren't his to chew. He has free roam of the first floor and loves to lay by the door or on the couch.

Duke is not overly vocal, but he will either whine or sit and stare at you if he needs to go outside to tend to his business or if he just wants some extra play time with you. He will also grunt with contentment while getting his head or tummy rubbed. He really prefers not to be alone and will bark the first few times you leave home without him, but settles down nicely after a minute or two. Now when I leave for work, Duke just looks out the window to see if I am really heading out or if I'm going to come back in the house.

Duke does love to play and needs a family member who will play with him and/or go for a walk at least once a day…both would be best in his book! One of his favorite games is to chase the spot made from the flashlight - - he just can't seem to get enough of trying to get the light! He also entertains himself with his stuffed squeaky hedgehog. Once he has played for a while, he is quite content to just hang around the house and be quiet and watch what's going on.

Duke is the perfect dog to take with you anywhere that you want to go. He is very social with people and other dogs on the outside. Duke can be talkative and will let you know when he wants to investigate a place or meet another dog when you are out and about. He is very food motivated, so it is easy to get him to sit, focus, and calm himself for a treat.

As Duke noted above, he is positive for heartworms. On the advice of our vets, we will NOT be putting him through the “rapid-kill” injection procedure right now. Rather, we’re going the slow-kill route of simply giving him the monthly heartworm preventative. This stops new worms from getting established, while the existing worms will eventually reach the end of their lifespan.
