DUDE ~4 years old.  Good with kids, dogs and cats.

GSRA ADOPTS IN VA, NC, and SC ONLY

Hi!! My name is Dude, and I am a very handsome and smart 4 year old GSD. I was an owner surrender from the Wilmington area. My prior owner reached out to one of our volunteers because she had a life style change that would not suite my needs. The GSD volunteer had seen me several times, since I used to stroll my neighborhood at night looking for people or other dogs to keep me company. I wasn't neutered at the time, so wandering is more common, and I was very lonely since my other mom worked a lot. I didn't want to be left out in the yard alone, so I went looking for companionship. I never harmed any dog though, since I really just wanted company. I am a little bit of an escape artist, so I need a secure fenced in yard, and you should make sure that your indoor doors are secured, because I know how to open them!! I am now knowing how good life can be in a home with a family, so I really don't want to leave or stroll, b ut I did try and follow my foster's child out one day at first. I just missed her! I absolutely ADORE and love my people!! I really want to be with them all of the time, so I really wouldn't do well being left alone all day. I would probably find a way to get out and come looking for you!! I need to be part of your lives and daily routine. I get along with other dogs as long as they don't try to push me around, and I lived with two cats in my prior life.

Note from foster mom:

Dude is a very stunning, gentle, and super smart GSD. He is a big boy, weighing in at a lean 100 lbs! I don't know where he puts his weight, since he only looks like 80 lbs, but he is long and tall, so it spreads out nicely. He has a beautiful soft coat and nice teeth. He is definitely eye candy!! Dude is a very loving and extremely gentle GSD who wants nothing more than to be with his people! He bonds very quickly, and loves to snuggle and give kisses. I'm sure he would have no trouble sleeping with you if you would let him, but we don't give him that option here. Otherwise, he is happy to lay on a nice soft dog bed.

Dude has a wonderful temperament, and gets along well with other dogs both large or small, as long as they don't try and push him around. He currently lives with an alpha female and goofy male GSD, and does well. He will stand his ground if tried though. He does well on neighborhood pack walks and is the type of dog that you can take to different places and expose to different things. He used to live with two cats and got along with them well.

Dude is crate trained, house trained, knows sit, leave it, off, stay (for about a min), paw, and come. He knows to sit and "watch me" before he eats, and knows to sit before being able to go for a walk, or before he is allowed to come back inside. His training could be phenomenal if you are willing to invest the time and effort, since he is VERY smart. He learned how to use our dog door in about 30 sec. He definitely needs at least two structured walks a day since he LOVES them, and this will help him bond to his new owners. He LOVES toys, and will hoard them into a favorite place where he runs and gets them when he wants to play. He rides well in the car, is UTD on his vaccinations, is neutered, and heart worm negative!

He is learning how to respect space with people. He would be a lap dog if allowed, since he just wants to be close, but directs easily with gentle corrections. He does mouth a little when he gets excited, but corrects easily with that as well. He adjusted quickly to our home and routine, as well as the rules and boundaries, and is a quick learner. He just needs patience. He will need someone to be his pack leader, and should have someone with breed experience since he doesn't quite have the confidence level yet. With his trusted leaders, he is well adjusted and looks to you for guidance. I would recommend an obedience class to strengthen his skills and confidence, and it will help with bonding. He gets along well with children of all sizes, but due to his large size, would have to be watched very closely with toddlers, as he may unintentionally knock them down. He needs a fenced in yard that is at least 5 feet tall with secured gates, since he can open a standar d gate.

Dude is a very special dog that has a wonderful temperament, is very sweet and affectionate, and just wants to be part of the family. Do you have room in your family for this very special boy?
