Hi! Meet
Erik
.
Erik
is a gorgeous bi-color majestic GSD, who is very smart, obedient and well trained – on and off leash. He loves people and especially meeting new friends and it will not take him long to determine your tummy scratching skills. He is an avid walker and loves exploring new places...especially if there are rabbits and squirrels, yes he does have a very high "prey instinct" and sometimes thinks he's a hound instead of herder. He probably has no idea what to do with one if he ever caught one...but because of that cats may not like him too much. He is very loving and loves to play ball and tug of war in the house, wrestle and of course get his tummy scratched or brushed. And I can’t forget to mention that he loves bacon and treats and will do just about anything for some. He is an excellent house/crate dog and very considerate and gentle in the house. Erik
has completed advanced off-leash training with Dogs By Andy and is very obedient. He knows upwards of 10 off-leash commands including heel, sit, stay, down, come, place (using a place board, implied stay), crate, shake, eat and leave-it. We are currently working on a few more. Erik
is a large and VERY strong dog who needs a very experienced GSD handler. He gets along well with other dogs his size, with proper introductions. He has a wonderful temperament.
Erik
has a very loud bark, and will definitely let you know if something is close to his yard or front door!! Since
Erik
does have a very loud bark, it would be best if he lives in a home without neighbors being directly on top of each other. I would not recommend an apartment or large neighborhood where a lot of dogs walk. He is an exactly house protector and will be a good 1st line of defense for his new forever family. Erik
is completely house and crate trained. He HAS to have a strong, confident, and fair leader that he can trust or he will take over. He is somewhat anxious at times when there are thunder storms or fireworks and needs to know that his family has his back. He would be okay as an only dog provided that he is not alone by himself all day. He is very sweet and gentle with his family and visitors, and is wonderful around older dog savvy children. He should not go to a home with children under 8 due to his large size because he may unintentionally knock them down. Erik
would love a fenced in yard to run and play, and daily walks to burn off some of his energy. The structure will help him bond with his owners, and also helps desensitize him to a leash and continue to enforce his off-leash training. He does have a hyper extended right wrist which causes him to limp sometimes. When a dog hyper extends one of their wrists, it is very hard to heal. Time and restriction from strenuous activity is best. If you are looking for a running partner,
Erik
will not be the dog for you, but if you are looking for a dog that likes to play and have daily walks and hang out with his humans or canine siblings, then he will be content. Erik
has made huge strides while he has been in foster care, but is still a work in progress. His recent “graduation” from off-leash training has been a huge boast to his confidence and obedience. He possesses a wonderful temperament, is very loving and gentle with his family and pack, and would make a great addition to the right home. Ideally, he would thrive on a farm or a house with a lot of land where he can explore. He recently attended a GSRA adoption event and behaved like a gentleman dog and was extremely well mannered and even did some off-leash walking through the crowds of people and other dogs. Erik
is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered, heart worm negative, and microchipped.
