German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Male (neutered)
~1.5 yrs old. Good with older considerate children and large dogs. Not good with young children or small dogs. Cats TBD. Sometimes the world is a scary place. You find yourself wandering, alone and unloved. You don't trust anyone. You are nervous and afraid, and just trying to survive. That is how little Albie was for several months. He was a stray just trying to get by, living in the woods behind a development. A kind family started leaving food out for him and slowly won his trust. They were not in a position to keep him, and contacted GSRA for help. Albie is a very handsome bi-colored GSD. He is about 1.5 years old, and is around 60 pounds. Albie was initially very nervous and unsure of his new surroundings. He took a few days to adjust to his foster home, but then bonded very quickly. He is an affectionate boy once he gets to know you, and wants to be close to you constantly. He is discovering some of the joys of being a dog. He loves his tennis ball, and will prance around with it and bat it around with his paws. He loves belly rubs and having his chest scratched. Albie wants to "belong" and seems to have a real willingness to please. Albie needs to build some confidence as well. He will get close to his human when nervous, and look for direction. Albie is going to need a family that will spend time with him and show him how good life can be. Albie is extremely nervous and fearful around children. I don't know if he had a prior negative experience, or if he is just apprehensive about their sudden movements. Albie will need a home with no children, or children over the age of 15. Albie likes to play with other dogs, but is a little bit lacking in the doggie skill set. He means no harm, but is a very rough and tumble player. He likes to wrestle and chase his doggie playmates, and his idea of initiating play is one of two ways. The first approach is to just start hip checking, putting his head over the shoulders of other dog, or rearing up on his back legs and bouncing off them with his paws. Method two is stalking...he will lay still in a crouched position and stare at his playmate...then he will leap up and charge at them to try to get a game of chase going. As you can imagine, some dogs might take offense to such mannerisms. He plays well with two of the other dogs here who are also rambunctious players. If a dog growls or attempts to correct him he will puff up, but is easily corrected with a firm verbal command. Albie also has a few medical conditions that need to be mentioned. He came into the rescue with horrible ear infections. They are almost resolved, but he needs to be watched possible flare-ups. Also, poor Albie had swollen and painfully inflamed paws. It turns out that he has demodex mange in his paws (it is NOT contagious). He is having medicated dips weekly to try and resolve this, and is also on daily doses of Ivermectin. The Ivermectin is just put on his food and he eats it without issue. He will most likely need to stay on Ivermenctin for several months. Once his feet recover he should be fine, but there is always a chance that the mange can come back in which case he will need to be on Ivermectin again. Fortunately, the Ivermectin is readily available, and is not very costly. Albie is making great progress with his feet, and happily runs around the yard. It is a tremendous improvement considering how he was hobbling around in pain only a few short weeks ago. Albie is a sweet boy who just needs someone to love him and continue to build his confidence. He will eagerly go anywhere with you once he trusts you, and is always up for an adventure. He is crate trained, housebroken, and rides well in the car. Albie also seems to have some prey drive, so a house with no small dogs or cats is a must. So what do you think?? Albie is going to be a very loyal and devoted companion for some lucky family. He needs a little bit of love and confidence building --- he will prove to you that he is a fantastic loving and devoted guy! Come meet Albie soon!!
