German Shepherd Dog (long coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Young
~2 1/2 years old. Good with older considerate children and dogs. Cats TBD. Weber is a gorgeous 2-3 yr old neutered, long haired GSD that was an owner surrender when a couple broke up their relationship. He currently weighs about 85 lbs, but he needs to put on about 10-15 lbs more, according to the vet. His hair hides his being under weight well. He has a beautiful, shiny long haired coat, and HUGE feet! He has a good appetite, so the weight gain to the desired level is only a matter of time. He is a VERY sweet and affectionate dog that bonds to his humans quickly. He soon becomes your shadow, and wants nothing more than to be by your side. Weber has been gentle with my 10 yr old daughter, and has met several of her 9 and 10 yr old friends without any problems. Since he is a very large boy, and will top out around 95-100 lbs, I would only recommend him going to a home with older considerate children. He doesn't know his size yet, so could unintentionally knock a small child down. Weber is a very smart cookie, and taught himself our double dog door system in about two hours! He may have been used to one in his prior life, but we won't know for sure. He is not scared of anything in the house, whether it be vacuum cleaners, hard wood floors, mops, blenders, ceiling fans, etc. He now knows sit, down, leave it, off, come, and shake. He knows to sit and wait for his meals, and sit before being allowed to go outside for his walks. He is also learning "watch me". It has only been 14 days in our home, and he has learned this already. He REALLY wants nothing more than to please, and needs that constant positive feedback to know he is doing the right thing. He had no manners when he came to us, and is learning them, but still has a ways to go. He does mouth a bit, which is getting better, but when he wants attention, he feels like he needs to use mouthing to get it. A spray bottle of water works WONDERS with this guy. The last thing that he wants to do is get sprayed, so he will stop whatever negative behavior he is doing, and quickly get on his bed- LOL! He will need continued consistency with his corrections until he stops doing this entirely. He has not mouthed my ten year old child yet, nor any of her friends. It is like he knows to be gentle to the children. Weber is in a way like a puppy in an adult body. He appears to have had no prior boundaries or structure. Well, he has those now, and is catching on very quickly that good behavior gets him positive praise. He is crate trained, and actually likes his crate, is house trained, LOVES to ride in a car, and walks at a perfect heel. He loves belly rubs, going for walks, and is now starting to discover toys. He will throw stuffed toys in the air, and run and catch them, and then do it all over again. He can amuse himself doing this for a while. He gets along well with his foster siblings, and gives them the respect that they deserve. He is starting to play with them, but will need careful supervision when playing since I don't think he knows how to always play appropriately. He would do best with a fenced in back yard, since he needs to expend some of his energy by running. I REALLY believe that this boy is a diamond in the rough. With some continued obedience training, exercise, discipline, patience, love, and guidance, he will rise to become the stellar dog that I know he is capable of becoming. I have seen huge strides over the past two weeks with him. He MUST have a strong pack leader to guide him. Prior GSD experience is a must with this boy, since he would be capable of becoming in charge of the house without strong leadership. Cats are TBD. Health issues: Weber is neutered, will be micro-chipped before adoption, and is up to date on all his shots. He is heart worm positive, but don't worry, the rescue will cover that. When Weber was a pup, he either had distemper or was given Doxycycline. Because of this, it has worn some of the enamel off of this teeth. Otherwise, this is a healthy, moderately active, large framed boy.
