From Vito ’s foster mommy….
Are you looking for 80 lbs. of pure love? When I first met Vito I thought he looked like a tough guy, but he is completely the opposite. It was obvious that the beginning of his life is not what any loving puppy should have gone through. It took him two days to warm up to me but now he is a “velcro” dog. He is either immediately next to me of his loving foster sister, Gracie. Now that he has experienced love, he acts as though he cannot get enough of it.
He is not food driven, but rather fear driven. Unexpected loud noises scare him, although has no problem with thunderstorms or airplanes (we are close to an airport). We have worked to desensitize him and it is working. He would also flinch every time I went to pat him on the back, but now that he has experienced back massages he is also getting much more comfortable with the love pats. It has been hard to teach him “sit” because he is so afraid to be submissive, but he is starting to now. Calling him to come has never been a problem. He is very well mannered and obviously intelligent, just scared. Now that he is “coming out of his shell” he will bark when people arrive at the house just to let me know, but then he stops. He is quiet the rest of the time.
Vitowill become a mommy and/or daddy’s boy. He would do best in a home that has a confident dog to continue to help him socialize. He will not do well if there are aggressive/territorial dogs in the house. He sometimes gets jealous when I am paying more attention to Gracie, but NEVER shows aggression. Again, he just wants all the love he can get. For this reason, it may be easier to have a larger human-to-dog ratio in the house, but honestly, once he understands he’s part of the family, he will be fine. Vito is extremely cautious and needs to have a family that is mature enough to understand his past and needs for his future.
