Confident, med/high energy, smart as a whip - everything you can expect in a GSD!

Derik came to us from a shelter in rural NC where, after they assessed him, they knew that he needed a breed savvy owner! They were struggling to find one in that area and contacted us. Upon meeting him, our volunteer was taken by his confidence, clear medium/high energy levels, and how quickly he picked up on the "sit" command - after two tries, he nailed it each time. We worked quickly to move Derik into one of our foster homes. He has thrived in his foster homes firm rules & boundaries, along with extensive play time with two lab buddies and daily tennis ball activities. They romp and wrestle throughout the entire day when not napping - and this is exactly what Derik needs - play time and an outlet for his mind/energy so he can be calm and collected in the house. This boy has mental energy to burn! Derik's furever home must have a four legged playmate :)

Derik's confidence with his ongoing training in his foster home has flourished. Being in a new environment requires a new understanding of what is expected of him (which he picks up quickly) .. Derik will need 'an understanding' of what his new boundaries and limits will be - so a strong leader (soft corrections is all he requires) with GSD experience is a must. Are you someone who has handled working dogs before? This might just be the dog for you! With new folks, he will see how much he can get away with - just like any GSD! He lives to be taught - so this is your guy if you are willing to put the time and effort into working with him. He is not a dog that will be happy with a slow walk each day & then laying by the fire - he is a man on a mission looking for what is next for him to do! :). He is extremely intelligent and easily picked up on the rules of the house - as long as his leader shows him the ropes, Derik is willing to follow. Derik appears to be very gentle however, like all GSD's who have a tendancy to push the limits, small kids are not recommended for Derik. His prey drive is fairly strong as well - so cats are most likely a no go. He has proven to get along with a Dachsund (small/med sized dog) very well.
