I would like to introduce everyone to Hank. Hank came to me from a really bad home life. He was bought when he was just a puppy. For over 8 years, he has lived the life of a yard dog. Never allowed inside, rarely fed or watered and neglected like an old piece of furniture. A while ago, his "owner" decided that it was time to clean up his yard. So he called Animal Control and had them pick up Hank and take him to the shelter. Hank had never been inside before and that, combined with the noise and frantic energy of the shelter left him terrified and withdrawn. He was moved to isolation to try to ease his nerves, but it didn't help much so he was put on the euthanasia schedule. The shelter knew that, with his advanced age and his pitiful body condition, no one would adopt him. Luckily for Hank, GSRA did not think the same way and brought him in. He spent his first couple weeks in vet boarding while he was treated for skin and ear infections, heartworms, and malnutrition. Hank has done a complete 180! His hair is growing back from where it was lost, his energy is way up, and he is eating well. I have never met such a loving dog. He has only one goal in life, and it is to receive attention. Toys, dogs or other distractions he is impartial to, but even hint you are going to scratch his head and he is all over you! Hank does great with kids and small dogs (he gets very interested in both, but never annoyingly or aggressively). I have not seen him with a cat, but I doubt it would be a problem with his disposition. It is amazing to see such a gentle personality on a dog with such a life of abuse! However, like all dogs, Hank has his quirks. He gets bad separation anxiety so he should not be left alone over carpet because he tries to dig. He is never destructive when I am home, and he has no interest in shoes or couches or window sills. He just wants his human close by when possible. I think when he knows s tability this will end quickly. It is already starting to fade after a couple weeks with me. Also, Hank is very vocal. He does not bark really at all, but will let you know what he wants by whining. This is another thing that is fading, but a new owner would definitely need to deal with. I try not to give him attention when he whines a lot, but its hard with a face like his. Lastly, Hank needs some leash training. He has pretty good manners, and is catching up on the basics fast, but I think it will take some time to get him used to a leash. He likes to pull and tie you up cause he is all over the place. That said, Hank is absolutely one of the best pups I have met. His affection and loyalty just make you want him from the moment you meet him. Also, when all his hair is back in, he is going to be a very handsome dog (not that he isn't now, but I can't wait to see him fully recovered). I think whoever gets him is going to be so happy. Hank loves life, and he out to make up for spending most of his in neglect.
