Meet Casey, an oversized teddy bear in a dog suit!
Casey is back with us after his prior adoption didn’t work out (more of that later). It’s a policy of GSRA that whenever an adopter can’t keep their adopted dog – no matter how long ago they adopted that dog – it must come back to us here at GSRA. So when things weren’t working out for Casey in his home, he packed up his suitcase and moved back in with his former foster Mom. Being the happy, confident dog that he is, he fitted in right away (even though he is sharing his foster Mom with 7 other dogs!!) and made himself at home. But now it’s time for him to spread his furry wings again and find a new home. With the information we have learned from his last adoption, we are confident that this time we will find him a family that will keep him forever!
Casey is now a big boy of about 4 years. He is up to date on all his medical stuff, is house trained, loves to ride in the car (like most GSDs!) and can stay in a crate during the day, even though its not his favorite thing in the world. He’s actually extremely well-mannered in the house and if it weren’t for all the other dogs in his foster home he would be fine to be left uncrated during the day. He doesn’t seem to mind his crate if the door is left open (he voluntarily sleeps in there during the evening), but he will whine and protest when he is put in there and the door is closed. However, being the smart boy that he is, he learned pretty quickly that complaining wasn’t going to win him his freedom, so he is now pretty accepting of being crated during the day. The only area he needs some work is on his leash manners. He’s a puller His foster Mom has tried to work on this with him but honestly, with so many other canine brothers and sisters to care for, there ’s still room for improvement. And it would be well worth someone’s time to teach him how to walk nicely as he would LOVE to be a running buddy for someone. Being a young, healthy boy, Casey has a lot of energy to expend, and running or jogging, or even power walking with his human would be a fun and efficient way to get him the exercise he needs. However, if you aren’t into running, that’s not a problem. Casey is just as happy playing in the back yard. One of his greatest delights is to play with sticks. We are not sure what the rules or the aim of his stick games are, but it looks like fun and Casey will keep himself busy for many hours playing with his wooded “toys”!
As much as Casey likes to play games with his sticks, he also LOVES to play with other dogs. We feel that he would do best in a home with another playful dog his age as he really has a ball charging around the backyard with his foster sister Layla (a playful boxer mix who also happens to be up for adoption…BOGO anyone???). He tends to get a little over stimulated when there are a lot of dogs in the mix, but with one or maybe 2 other playmates he would be a very happy camper. As for people, Casey loves them, especially when they are HIS people. He takes his role as the family GSD very seriously, sometimes a little too seriously, so that is something that needs to be watched. In his previous home, he lived with some young children and he was wonderful and protective of them. However, the lifestyle that comes with young children (lots of play dates and visitors, lots of little ones running around screaming and waving their arms) was pretty worrisome for Casey. For that reason, we are looking for a calmer, less active home for him this time around.
Casey is a GSD through and through, and for this reason he is going to need a GSD-savvy owner. He likes to think he is in charge, but as we all know, a dog calling all the shots in the house is not a good idea (if it were, we would all be living on milk bones that were delivered to the house and the TV would be permanently tuned to the Animal Planet!). Also, truth be told, Casey doesn’t really make great choices when he thinks he needs to be the boss. This is what got him into trouble in his former home so we are going to be pretty picky about who this gorgeous boy goes to next. Casey’s owner HAS to be able to lay down the law and demonstrate leadership over this boy. And no wiggle room – this boy will smell an inch and take a mile before you even know what is happening! No, Casey is not the dog for a first time GSD owner, but for anyone used to dealing with this breed he will be a gem. As soon as he knows the gig is up, and that he isn’t actually in charge, he turns into a giant marshmallow – whose only desire is to play and to make you laugh. So, what do you think?
