(5-6 years old) Good with dogs. Good with older kids and cats with supervision.
"Fat bottomed girls, fat bottomed girls, fat bottomed girls you make the rocking world go round.." Ah... the wonderful lyrics immortalized by Queen!! No doubt this song has been applied to many "well-endowed" lasses but I am pretty sure it is the first time it is being sung about a GSD. Still, there is no way to ignore it, Freya IS a fat bottomed girl! But she wasn't always this large and lovely, in fact, she was down right scrawny and hairless!!! But thanks to her Fairy Godparents Joanne and Jim (who looked after Freya while we waited for space to open up in GSRA) she has "blossomed" into a gorgeous girl with a full head of hair and a full.....welll....you know what :)
Freya was found as a stray, so we don't know anything about her prior life. But we do know that somewhere along the way she was well taken care of. She had already been spayed and she was heartworm negative - a true miracle when you are considering stray dogs in the south! Even in the shelter, Freya's personality and "joie de vivre" shone through. You see, nothing gets Freya down...absolutely nothing. As I like to say, she's "fluffy sunshine".
Freya is currently living with 5 other dogs and 2 cats - quite the full household. Freya gets along with everyone, including the cats. She will need dog-savvy cats though as she does like to get "up close and personal" with them, but she means no harm. When she gets a little excited around them all you need to do is give her a verbal reminder of what is and isn't allowed and she backs off. As far as dogs go, Freya is an equal opportunity kind of girl. Any size, and sex, any breed, its all the same to her. We even had a 6 month old puppy here for a bit and Freya was the perfect substitute Mom to her. Now that all said, we actually think that Freya would really prefer to be an only dog. She doesn't really play with the other dogs and her focus is always on her humans. She can live very harmoniously with other dogs (although she will bark at other dogs when outside of the home, like at adoption events!!), but if you are looking for a playmate for your current dog, I think there would be better candidates than Freya. Freya wants to lounge with her people, go for gentle walks, ride in the car, help you on the computer, watch as you do laundry, help you prepare your taxes.... ok, that last one is just my wishful thinking...but you get the idea: wherever you are, Freya is.. regardless of what the other dogs are doing.
In the house Freya is excellent! She cannot be crated as this stresses her out a lot, but that's ok as she is totally trustworthy in terms of the fact she won't bother anything she's not supposed to when left unattended. She is very food motivated, so you can't leave food lying around where she can get it, but overall, her house manners are well above average.
So what kind of home would suit Freya best?? First off, she will need someone experienced with GSDs or another highly intelligent breed. Freya definitely knows right from wrong, but convincing her to do things "our" way has been a challenge at times. This girl is pretty strong minded :) Not in an aggressive way (she doesn't have an aggressive bone in her body) but in a "until you convince me your way is better, I am sticking to my way" mode of operation. I guess you can't really blame her, this strength of character is probably what got her through the lean years before she came into GSRA! Freya would also do best in a low-impact kind of home - she's never going to be a long distance runner, or a high jumper, but she does really like going for walks. She also has shown a great affinity for water!! Check out some of the pictures - these were taken at Duke Gardens where, quite unexpectedly, she walked straight off a small pier and jumped into the ornamental lake!
Freya LOVES to ride in the car, so a home where she could go cruising would suit her well. She is an excellent passenger by the way - she has good balance and likes to stand between the 2 front seats and help navigate. At home she is into whatever her people are into. For instance, as I sit here and type, she is lying on the chaise lounge behind me....but I know as soon as I get up, she will too.... she is a VERY typical GSD in that she never wants to be far away. Oh, and she's a touchy-feeling kind of gal - she LOVES to be patted and cuddled and kissed...she soaks up any attention given to her, but is not demanding at all.
You know, she's really quite perfect!
Take a look at the pictures as I think they capture Freya's personality well. She is so much fun and seems to have a really good sense of humor. She does well in any situation and is just a joy to have around. She's obviously been through some "stuff", but it hasn't tainted her view on the world (or on humans!!). But now it's time for her to relax and enjoy all the great things life has to offer. So if you are ready to make this "fat bottomed girl" the center of your "rocking world", put in an application and ask for Freya....she'll be waiting :)
