P l ease meet a very special little lady called...well....Lady!

Lady is an absolutely stunning black and tan shepherd who is approximately 5 yrs old.  She has the most beautiful, soulful amber eyes that seem to reflect the hard life she endured before coming into rescue. Another reflection of her past is her extreme shyness . Even after being with me for close to 5 months, Lady is very skittish, and is easily startled by common occurances...loud noises, sudden movements, things being out of place, etc.  Despite being scared stiff (literally) by these things,  Lady does not have an aggressive bone in her body; when she is scared, she will either assume the fetal position and stare at you with wide eyes, or retreat and run to her safe place (her crate).

Even though Lady is still very much a work-in-progress in terms of her fearfulness, she has made tremendous progress during the time she has been with me.  It is clear that she craves human interaction, but at the same time, she seems scared by direct contact. I truly believe that she has been so let down by people in the past who have treated her cruelly that she just can't let herself now believe that humans can be kind to her. She will not come if callled, and will flee if you approach her.  However, if you give her some space, she will come up to you and initiate contact. If we are out in public, she seeks me out in order to feel safe. She will also sleep in the bed if allowed, and gently lick your hand for acknoledgement, but if you make a sudden movement, she will dart accross the room. Lady *wants* to be loved, she just isn't able to let go of her fears...yet. But I know, from the improvements I have already seen, that she will, she just needs a family that is willing to give her time to overcome her insecurities. Each day I see her making progress, finally starting to come out of her shell and accept the idea that people can be her friend.  Although she is still extremely cautious, I think she is starting to feel a little more confident.  I brought Lady to a local dog festival a few weeks ago, and although she was initially terrified by all the excitement and activity, she settled down quickly.  She was able to walk around and even allowed several people to pet her.  I feel this is huge progress on her part.

Lady needs to be placed in a home with another dog that will accept her and show her the ropes.  Lady gravitates towards several of the resident dogs, and I firmly believe that much of the progress she has made has been due to their influence.  Lady is a follower, and tries very hard to mimic the behavior of the dogs around her.  Lady is very gentle, and extremley submissive...if another dog corrects her, she just rolls over on her back, and makes no attempt to assert herself.  She just wants to belong.

Lady came to me under-fed and heartworm positive. But today she is very healthy girl.  She has been spayed and successfully undergone heartworm treatment. She is an absolute gem in the house and is totally non destructive. She  is also fine being left alone uncrated with the resident dogs, although she really does prefer to be in the safety of her crate.  A secure, fenced yard is a must for anyone interested in adopting this sweet girl as she will run like the wind if she gets startled.

Lady is a true diamond in the rough. She needs a quiet family with another friendy dog to show her the ropes and prove to her that life can be wonderful.  While she will probably never be a social butterfly, if she gets in a home with a patient family who is willing to work with her to overcome her insecurities, she will be a loving and devoted companion
