German Shepherd Dog / Mixed : : Male (neutered) : : Medium
(8-10 months) Good with kids, dogs, and cats. Santana…don’t you just want eat him up?! He is cute and cuddly and he just loves to snuggle! “Tana Banana”, as we affectionately call him, is a spunky lil pup. He’s got a GSD personality, but in a small convenient lil package. He is about 8-10 months old and we believe he’s as big as he’s going to get at about 40lbs. We think he may be GSD mixed with Basenji. He’s got a gorgeous sable GSD coat, but he’s also got some Basenji traits such as the tight curly tail, the wrinkles on the forehead and that cute as can be little Basenji prance. No fear though, no one told Tana that he’s not 75lbs and he can hold his own with any big dog. He loves to rough and tumbly play!!
No matter his breed, this lil firecracker got some herding instincts from somewhere. He loves to try and herd his foster sis who loves a good game of chase. They can play and play for hours! You should see them come in after after a good game of chase in the yard…especially if its somewhat wet and muddy. They are tuckered out, covered in mud, with grins from ear to ear! What fun they have?! Santana has lots of bouncy energy and would LOVE a playful canine companion in his new home….preferably one that likes chasing and wrestling. But, no worries, Tana has excellent house manners and knows how to settle when its time to come in the house and chill. One of his fave things is to curl up with you in the evenings while you watch a movie. He is the BEST cuddle bug ever.
Along with his 2 canine siblings, he lives with a feline buddy who he stears clear of. I think she scares him a bit!! He knows to not mess with the furry thing that hisses! No good could come of that….he’s a smart guy! He also has a 9yr old lil human that he enjoys getting snuggles and hugs from. He can be bouncy when he’s excited but he tries with all his might to keep all 4 paws on the floor. So, he’d probably be best with kids that have dog experience. He sometimes forgets that he can’t herd the lil humans, so he will need reminders that furry kids are okay to herd, but not the ones with 2 legs! He’s very easily corrected…not a stubborn, willful guy at all!
OH…I almost forgot to mention…that once Tana moves in…he is ready to scare off all those “intruders” from the house! He’s quite the lil watchdog and will bark up a storm to strangers passing his house. When new folks come in, you will need to tell Tana that they are okay, because he WILL try to scare them away. It is very important to lay down good ground rules to keep this in check. He is housetrained and crate trained. He whines when he first goes in his crate, but settles. We are working on leash manners and know he will get the hang of it soon.
Now all these things I tell you above are Santana Banana’s traits at home with his family that he’s settled into. He came from an undersocialized background and is naturally aloof with new people. It takes time for him to warm up to new people and new environments so he will need a family that can patiently encourage him to come out of his shell. He doesn’t need to be “babied” but he needs postive encouragement to try new things and meet new people. He’s an absolute gem once he opens up and shows his true colors. He is MORE than worth the effort. You won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to help this boy blossom into a great boy! With Tana’s small size, he’s going to always look like that cute lil puppy that everyone wants to eat up! So, don’t miss out on this boy, because that’s lots of snuggly you’ll be missin!! In the meantime, he’ll be here snugglin with us!
