German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Adult : : Medium
(2-3 years old) Good with kids, cats, and dogs.
Hi everyone! Meet Aldrik, one of the GSRA's handsome hunks! Aldrik in German means noble friend, and that is what this wonderful boy will be if given a chance. Aldrik is about 2-3 years old, and has encountered some rough times. He was returned to the shelter twice, more out of ignorance of the people adopting him. He was sick with whipworms the first time, and if any of you have experienced a dog with whipworms, you will understand how sick these animals can be. With all of the GI upset, its understandable this poor boy was scared and confused, hence part of the reason he was returned the first time. He has been treated and is whipworm free! The second time was because the new adopter found out he was heart worm positive, and instead of treating this boy, they returned him. He will undergo heart worm treatment on 10/14/10.
When I started fostering this boy, I thought that I would encounter a very scared, troubled dog. Boy, did he surprise me! He may have been a timid for the first couple of hours, but then he started coming out of his shell. He bonds quickly to his owners. What I found was an extremely gentle dog, who wants to be by your side and be loved. He enjoys being in a family setting, is extremely gentle with my child and my other GSD's. He is enjoying being part of our pack. He LOVES going for walks, playing with balls and toys (but only for a short time), and loves looking out our large windows seeing the world from a nurturing environment. He feels very safe and protected here. He smiles ALL the time! We are working on some basic obedience training with him. He walks well on the leash, will sit, come, and leave it. He will sit for his food, but it took a while for him to feel comfortable doing this, since he was so excited to get food. Patience is the key with this fellow. He is smart and will correct easily, but it needs to be done in a gentle way to help build his confidence and not intimidate him. He is crate trained, but does not like his crate. We find that he is trust worthy in the house and have given him free roam when we are at work, and he has respected our home and not damaged anything. He is also house trained, knows how to use dog doors, loves to ride in the car, and gets along with other dogs and even cats.
Aldrik would do best in a home with a work from home person or someone who is not away from home for long periods of time. He needs to be near his people and is most content when they are around. He would also do well with a canine companion.
