(4 years) Leila/pronounced "Layla"….. Means “dark beauty, born at night.” Leila is a diamond in the rough and will truly be a beauty as she blossoms…...

Leila showed up at a subdivision in rural Dunn, NC. A woman heard something at her front door, answered it to find a dog crying on her front step. What a smart dog with a strong survival instinct to have the courage to go to someone’s door she didn’t even know! With the door open, the dog ran into the house, to the commode and began drinking water. She then proceeded to lie down on the tile floor to try to cool herself. The woman had a young infant and was rightfully alarmed and called animal control. Leila ended up in a shelter and the GS rescue saved her the day before she was to be euthanized. We have never seen a dog so skinny before. She reminded us of what we would see on the National Geographic channel. Her neck had scars that were healing indicative of a collar being embedded sometime in the past.

Leila is a trusting and funloving dog! She is a very kind, playful soul who seems more like a puppy , not the 4 yrs old the vet estimated her to be. She absolutely LOVES to play with sticks and balls and loves to play with our male shepherds. She actually makes us laugh constantly because she will roll in the grass and even turn upside down. She continues to be more and more at ease and more trusting as each day passes. She is crate trained and has not had any accidents in our home. We doubt you actually need to keep her in a crate. We have been spending time getting her body back into nutritional shape. She was eating quite a bit of food for the first 10 days we had her and is now eating regular rations....Leila does not 100% understand the word no yet. She is learning things such as “sit” and has learned very quickly about walking on a leash etc…She learned her new name in the first few days we had her. She would of course, benefit from any dog classes you could take w/ her. Leila’s body is still a little bit thin and her coat will continue to grow out over the next few months as her body gets stronger.

Leila is a wonderful companion. She is an alert, sweet dog that loves company. She is even learning to live w/ our two cats. She could possibly live in a home w/ cats w/ the right owners and the right cat, that had the patience and experience to train her consistently. Leila is not likely to run away and stays close to home when we are mowing the pastures or working in our horse arena. She is very friendly and does not have the aggressive/ barking type characteristic of some shepherds that we have fostered in the past. Leila loves to travel in cars…..She will actively jump in when we arrive home or are unloading……

Leila’s ideal home would be a moderately active or active life style. One where there was another dog or that someone was home during the day. She really needs the ability to play and loves playing. Leila, “dark beauty”, has beauty inside and out! Her transformation continues to be amazing to witness. We are continually amazed at the power of love. Leila is blooming from love. That is all any dog really wants and deserves….. Do you have love in your heart that warrants having Leila as part of your family? Leila will make an incredible dog for the right family. Please be ready to play!

August 5, 2010 As of this writing, Leila has made significant improvement w/ cats!  We have actually seen her lie down next to our cats!  I would imagine if she went to a home w/ a cat, the cat would have to be dog savvy, and it would be best if you had another dog as a companion for Leila. She really loves playing with another dog.  Leila does not have really high prey drive, it is more like she is interested in playing.  She absolutley LOVES to play!  She will go into the creek with our other dogs.  She has a very  gentle nature and personality and has the ability to just hang by your feet when you are watching a good movie.  She is a moderate-high activity type of dog but not hyper.  Her coat has become much better.  She is now normal weight and continues to blossom. She is a gorgeous dog.  She is very good in new situations with both people and other dogs.  She is excellent around horses.  She does not have any aggressive behaviours that we have seen.  We will begin her heartworm treatment 8/10/2010.  Leila will be going to the adoption event in Cary on 8/14/2010.  Please come visit Leila!
