(5 years old) Let me introduce Miss Shiloh a very sweet and stunningly beautiful female GSD which we guess is about 5 years old. I want to tell you about Shiloh because I believe her story is what GSRA is all about and why being a GSRA volunteer it is so rewarding.

Last fall Shiloh was a stray looking for a safe place to have her pups. Shiloh gave birth to 11 beautiful puppies under some stairs. Shiloh was so afraid of people she actually had to be trapped by animal control officers. So there was Shiloh and her puppies in a county shelter wondering what their future held. The shelter contacted GSRA and soon Shiloh and here puppies were in a caring and loving foster home. Sadly, the pups contracted Parvo at the shelter and only three survived. GSRA found forever homes for two and one is still searching for his forever home. Shiloh’s first foster mom gave her loving care but with a full time job and several other foster dogs she could not give Shiloh the time she needed to overcome her fear of people. Since I am retiree with more time and fewer foster dogs I was excited to have the honor of trying to help Miss Shiloh.
So in early February of this year I went to pick up Miss Shiloh. I have fostered abused dogs before, but I have never seen a German Shepherd Dog with so much fear. Shiloh would cower and shake profusely at the mere sight of a human much less try and approach her. When we got Shiloh home she found a dark corner in an empty room and that’s where she stayed. When we let her out she would not even use the potty if we were in sight, much less eat in the presence of anyone. For the first few months all Shiloh did was lay in that corner. She did not want any attention from us or our three German Sheherd Dogs. Even with all of her fear, Shiloh was never aggressive toward anyone. I just cannot imagine what Shiloh’s life must have been like to have such fear, but I knew that life was behind her now.

It took time but Shiloh slowly began to change. She began to enjoy the companionship of our other GSDs and slowly her fears seem to subside and her trust grew a little each week. She began to spend time in the evening with us and the other dogs in the den. Then about a month ago it happened, Shiloh began her transformation and blossomed in to the beautiful, sweet GSD she is. You should see her now. I am so proud of Shiloh. She greets you with happy eyes and her tail wagging. She loves her attention and will gently stroke you with her paw if you quit petting her to soon. I do not believe that Shiloh has ever had any training since she does not seem to know any commands nor does she really know how to play, but we are working on this now. She walks well on a leash and enjoys her walks. She gets along with the other dogs and is great with our two year old granddaughter. Shiloh doesn’t mind being crated, in fact she likes the security, but we give her free reign in the house and she has never had an accident. Shiloh just had her heart worm treatment and will need to be spade after she recovers. To have witnessed how Shiloh has changed just tugs at our hearts.

Do you have the patience to gain her trust and continue to work with her on her doggie skills? I know that Shiloh’s love and loyalty is well worth the effort. She is one of the sweetest GSDs you will ever meet. So, how about it, could yours be that loving forever home that shows Shiloh what a GSDs life should be.
