German Shepherd Dog (long coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult : : Large
(4 years old) Not good with cats or kids. Dogs TBD
Bacci is often described as a big teddy bear, but her road to recovery has been a long one and she is still continuing to improve. When she arrived at German Shepherd Rescue, she was all skins and bones, with her long, full coat matted. It took Suite Paws in Raleigh four washings to get all the grime off, and months of treatments to get rid of painful ear infections.
Now she is a beautiful, long-haired girl who loves to have her ears and neck scratched, belly rubbed -- well, any kind of loving and attention! Bacci is extremely affectionate and bonds to her people. She is not constantly underfoot, but she will accompany you wherever you are in the house. Sometimes she'll come up and put her head in your lap for a spontaneous kiss. Bacci has lived in a foster home with large group of dogs (although she sometimes tried to herd the others around a bit!), and in her current foster home she has been wonderful and respectful to the smaller, older male dog in the family. She has also learned to ignore the neighborhood dogs on walks. However, she will bark at strange dogs. While this can sound quite fearsome, we believe this is primarily insecure, not aggressive, behavior. She is learning to meet others nicely, and she can now meet well-behaved new people: if reassured, she will go up to the person and get her ears scratched and maybe even give a lick or two! Because she needs to continue to learn, Bacci will do best in a forever home that has experience with being a positive leader. Bacci is very eager to please and responds well to positive training. She is extremely easy to live with -- she doesn't require a lot of exercise, and will snooze in whatever room you are in. She loves her stuffy Snoop and carries him around and uses him as a pillow! She also LOVES to take care rides (although she needs some help jumping in the car). Bacci has some health issues which should continue to improve with care. She appears to have allergies, and is currently on an allergy diet to try to control the symptoms (primarily itchy paws). Allergy diets are readily available and not particularly expensive. Probably due to her earlier neglect, she also has pain and muscle loss in her back legs, which is being controlled with a pain medication. Regular low-impact exercise is very good for her; she currently takes a 20-35 minute walk about 5 days a week. Bacci's foster family, and their older dog, think she is one of the most loving and enjoyable dogs they have shared their home with! If you are looking for a dog to take to the dog park and social events, Bacci would not be a good choice. However, if you want an undemanding, loyal, affectionate companion you will find that Bacci steals your heart! More about BacciNot Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids Current Scheduled Events:
