German Shepherd Dog : : Female (spayed) : : Adult : : Large
(4 years old) Good with kids. Not good with dogs or cats.
Hettie is a doll! She needs to be an only dog as she wants to be large and in charge....
She is sweet and submissive with people and is very eager to please. Hettie is not as mouthy as she was when she first came to us. She is "lovey-mouthy"....when you brush her, she likes to reach around and nibble at you or run after and nip at your fingers. A lot of times when I'm hugging her or loving on her, she'll nibble on my chin. She would be good with older children who wouldn't misunderstand those little love nibbles. She is a huge cuddlebug and loves to be with her people and hang out. Definitely a medium energy girl. She loves to go for long walks around our property but is equally happy to just crash at our feet when we watch tv. She LOVES to chew on nylabones, could care less about squeaky toys except to tear them up in about 30 seconds flat. She crates beautifully and I do crate her when we go out - she's a tall, leggy girl and we use a 48" L crate. She isn't particularly vocal, except for the usual warning barks if someone rings the doorbell and a few moony groany noises when she's getting good belly rubs. She does have thunder phobia but I find that if I put her on leash and keep her close so she isn't pacing and working herself up it helps. If the thunder is off in the distance, I can cover it up with "white noise" ie, the TV, the cooktop fan, the dishwasher, etc. She also has a little spay incontinence - this happens every few weeks and only in her sleep....she can get so relaxed that she'll dribble some while she's asleep. This can be completely controlled with a prescription of proin but we have chosen not to put her on that at this time as she is a relatively young girl and I quite frankly don't mind tossing her bed in the wash - that needs to be done anyway. She is completely housebroken. When we pulled Hettie from the shelter, she was a walking bag of bones and had the coarse coat of a severely malnourished dog. She weighed 49lbs. Miraculously, for all her neglect, she was heartworm negative. We nursed her back to health - lots of high fat/high calorie meals the first few weeks she was with us and today she is at her ideal weight of 75lbs. She has one of the softest coats I have ever touched. She loves to be brushed and "messed with", even lets us cut her nails so long as someone is giving her belly rubs while we do! She is a really sweet girl and would love to be an only dog and have all the attention.
