RIVER ~3 years old. Good with dogs and cats. Kids TBD.
GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.
You are looking for the love and loyalty of a German Shepherd, but are hoping for a dog who will be sufficiently exercised just by following you around the house? Or maybe you have a beloved cat whose safety and comfort you need to prioritize? River is your guy!
River's foster parents will be honest - his love and trust were not free. While many of the dogs who enter GSRA are just so excited to know love and stability for the first time, River had been a part of a family his whole life and he felt that loss heavily when he entered GSRA. But with given some space to grieve, along long walks, yummy treats, and soft pets, River turned around in less than a week to be one of the most loving dogs his fosters have ever met. It will be important for River's adopters to know that he may react similarly when he transitions to his new home, but he deserves that chance to come around and show his true personality.
River's favorite place to be is cuddled up on the couch next to his people receiving his necessary head scratchies and face massage. He does tip generously with kisses! Second favorite place is any where else next to you - on leash for a long walk, laying by your feet in the office or while you cook, on a special car ride adventure. But don't worry if you work long hours like his veterinarian foster mama, River is also content to patiently wait for you to come home. He has not shown any signs of separation anxiety and is incredibly well crated-trained. He likes his foster parents' fenced yard for brief periods to run around and explore, but the couch is inside... so he does not see much reason to stay out there for long.
River is currently living with two other GSD's, an older female and a young, wild 3-legged male, and does great with them. He is also living with an adult female cat who he could not be better with. This cat is used to her crazy parents bringing home lots of new fosters and typically stays away from the new additions for several weeks, but this time she seems to automatically recognize River as a safe friend who needed some comfort. In his previous home, River also lived with a small dog and elementary school-aged child and would likely do well again with both.
River's foster parents could brag about him all day and would love to tell you more. Do you think he could be your guy?
