ANNIE ~8 years old. Good with dogs. Not good with cats. Kids TBD.

Miss Annie is a lovely senior girl who came to GSRA after being surrendered to a shelter by previous owners. We cannot know the circumstances that led to this and we try not to judge, but suffice it to say that this was NOT a positive change for Annie. She truly languished in the shelter environment, becoming shuttered, withdrawn, and uninterested in engaging with life; only watching, watching, watching for her people to return—heartbreaking for anyone who saw it. To be honest, we thought she was going to be a “project” dog, taking many months in a foster home before she’d learn to trust again. To our delight, that has not been the case! Within days of moving into foster care her spirit began to glow again—just a little bit at first, as she lost the “worried” look she’d had for so long. And then it burned a little brighter, as she learned the household routine and that we’d return to the same place, even if there was an outing to a scary place like a vet’s office—she wasn’t going to be abandoned again. And now it’s shining brightly—Annie is a happy girl who patrols the yard with gusto (lest any squirrels or cats think about entering it!), loves her daily walks, and is clumsily learning to play with a ball. She has also revealed excellent house manners—no counter-surfing, no potty accidents, no destruction of household items—just an easy, easy companion to have around.

Now this is in a quiet home, without a lot of people coming and going, and I think that is what Annie needs. She still gets VERY worried when taken to a new place. Although that will improve as she learns that her new family is “forever,” I don’t think she’ll ever be a social butterfly. But if you have a quiet lifestyle and will be patient when introducing Annie to new things, she will pay you back in spades with gratitude, devotion, a loving presence in your home, and a brightly shining spirit.
