FREDDY ~3-6 years old. Kids, dogs, and cats TBD.

Sometimes life can be exceptionally cruel.
Sometimes you wonder how animals can overcome horrific abuse and neglect.
Sometimes you just have to take a chance and pray for the best because in spite of everything that happens, it is not the dogs fault and they do deserve a chance at a better life.
Such is the case with Freddy. Freddie is a very pretty middle-aged German Shepherd. We are guessing him to be between 3 to 6 years old. He was part of a cruelty case. Without going into details, he was part of a large group of dogs that were severely neglected and left un-socialized.
Freddie was initially extremely fearful. He was emotionally shut down. It has taken some time to gain his trust, but once he bonds to you, he is very loyal and very affectionate. Freddie is a very pretty dog, he is what they call a “blue“. He has the normal German shepherd markings, but instead of his fur being black for the saddle and other areas, it is that gray/Weimaraner color. He has very pretty amber eyes. Freddie is a fairly tall dog, and he weighs approximately 70 pounds at the moment.
Freddie is a work in progress. He takes a little bit of time to warm up to people that he does not know. He is very food motivated, so if you have a good high-value treats such as some Bojangles chicken or tater tot’s, he will become your friend a lot faster. He is a nervous dog, and I think he lacks confidence. When he is unsure of something his response is to try to avoid it. When he is out in public he is nervous, but he just keeps an eye everything and stays close to his human. Once he trusts you, he looks at you for direction and support. He likes attention and loves to be petted and really likes having his head scratched and rubbed. He wants to be near you. He is a blank slate. He is learning how to be a dog because he has been just isolated and neglected for so long. Freddie is going to need a home where his new family is very patient and understanding and allows him to bond with them and continue to gain confidence through additional exposure to outside stimulus. He is very comfortable in the home, but gets very nervous when he is out in public.
Freddie is selective in his interactions with other dogs. He is missing half of one of his ears. No doubt this came from a scuffle over fighting for the limited resources that were available from his prior circumstances. Freddie is not aggressive towards other dogs, he seeks to avoid them. He takes a little while to warm up to other dogs and he does well with dogs that can cohabitate without trying to engage him in play. If a dog gets up in his face and tries to get him to play, he will get defensive. Freddie would be best as an only dog, or with another middle-age dog that is not wanting to roughhouse and is willing to just amble around the yard and co-exist. He has done well with a couple of my older female dogs. He seems to do better with gradual introductions and desensitization to additional dogs
Freddie is a really sweet boy and he’s just looking for someone to love him and let him be part of their world. Freddie rides well in the car and walks fairly decently on a leash although he does tend to zigzag a little bit. He doesn’t seem to know any commands, but he does seem to want to please and is extremely food motivated.
Freddy will do best with a family or individual that has a quieter lifestyle. He’s never going to be a social butterfly. But if you want an easy-going and loving companion, come meet him soon. He is a super boy. He is crate trained and housebroken, and does not seem destructive.
Freddie has been treated for heartworm’s, and is now in his recovery phase. He will be ready for his new home in late September.
