SHORTY ~ 1-2 years old.  Good with older considerate children and dogs.  Cats TBD.

GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only

Hey there! My name is Shorty, and I am a delightful little pocket sized shepherd! I am appropriately named, as I am rather short, and I also have a "short" tail...it is only about half of a tail. I weigh about 45 pounds, and am about 1.5-2 yrs old. Anyhow, I have a beautiful sable coat, and bright shiny eyes. I can be very shy when meeting new people, or when exposed to new things. Once I determine that you are my friend I am very eager for attention and very loving.

From foster mom:
Shorty is a very sweet dog, who needs to build confidence and continue to develop. She was very fearful when she was initially assessed and brought into rescue. She has been making great progress in learning how to deal with new people and things. Once she has determined that she likes/trust you, she is very devoted. She will follow you everywhere and sit in front of you eager to get attention. She likes to be petted, and will also sleep in the bed if you will let her. She has a cute little energetic play style...she will race around in a circle and then come to a sliding sit in front of you. It seems like she is eager to learn, but is still trying to figure out what is expected of her.

Shorty is crate trained, and is very well behaved in the crate. She does well when supervised in the house as well. As she is gaining confidence, she is becoming a bit more curious about things....she has discovered that shoes are fun to carry around!! So, I would recommend crating when you are not watching her. Shorty seems selective about the dogs she chooses to interact with...I think a large part of this is that she was not well socialized, and is a bit fearful of dogs. She does very well with two resident dogs that are fairly calm and do not crowd her, but she gets a bit defensive around high energy dogs, of dogs that try to engage her in play. Shorty was shown a few cats at the shelter, and acted scared of them. We would need to retest in a less stressful environment just to be sure.

Shorty will need an adopter who will continue to build her confidence and utilize positive reinforcement. Shorty is decently food motivated most of the time. Due to her nervousness, a home with a fenced yard is preferred. A quiet household without lots of visitors/activities would be the best fit for her. Whoever adopts Shorty and gives her the time to mature and learn how to be a dog and well loved family member will be rewarded with a fabulous sweet and devoted companion. Shorty is a super dog!!
