Ok...Cole is back in the baseball lineup ladies and gents. He was limping on a rear leg at the end of June and went on injured reserve list. We pulled Cole from the "game" to investigate his limp. With rest and meds he has made a nice recovery and is ready to lead the batting order! Cole says "Put me in coach, I'm ready to play" And boy can he play!
In looking for the problem, we x-rayed Coles hips and found them to be non-symptomatic dysplastic. Big words that mean Cole has no pain/problem now but in the future he may need pain management with lots of options.
Questions for vet:

  • What physical clues should we see/look for to indicate a hip problem?
  • What minor manipulations could a foster do to confirm or deny suspicions?
  • Once there's a diagnosis, how quickly do you progress from pain meds to surgery?
  • Does it always end in surgery?
  • Should certain activities be encouraged or denied?
  • What about play with other dogs?
  • To crate or not to crate?
  • What pain meds or vitamins help/hurt?

Please don't let this discourage you from bringing Cole into your heart and home.  Nothing is set in stone and he very well could live out the rest of his days with no issues.  Cole is an utter sweetheart and wants nothing more than to curl up in your lap getting belly rubs while giving kisses.  Won't you give a guy a chance?  You won't regret it!

================================
Big wonderful Cole was the "daddy" of a family of 4 sheppies found in a road drainage ditch. Yep mom, dad and 2 pups were taken in by GSRA. He was all boy and heartworm positive. He has since been neutered and is awaiting heartworm treatment. Cole is learning how to live in a house. He is now crate/housetrained, lives with many dogs and cats well. He is crated when I am not home and loose in the house at night. He has a big personality and is trying his best to learn everything. He is SLOWLY learning manners and is rather like " a bull in a china shop". He is a lot of dog but really wants to please you. If he could just figure out what you want! Because of his energy, lack of manners (at this time), and his size, I don't recommend him for a home with small children.

Cole is learning. He loves to be with people. He can come in from play and lay down. Cole has what we call "an off button". He is learning that play/energy is for outside and inside is for calmer persuits. Cole rides well in the car. Just another way to be around people he figures. He is a fabulous, true DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH. Hence his name. Cole will grow up to be the best dog people have ever seen given the right leadership, rules and boundaries every dog needs to learn. Cole is learning... who is ready to step up and help this boy become the diamond hidden under his coal
