~2 1/2 years old.  Good with older considerate children and male dogs.  Cats TBD.  Not good with female dogs.

Hi, I’m Maya! I’m a pretty 2.5 year old female GSD. I was purchased from a breeder in Charlotte as a puppy by a family with a couple of children. Unfortunately, they thought I was too active to be in the house (Come on, I was a puppy!) and I was left outside in a chain link run for most of the time. I was pretty lonely. A few months ago, my family divorced and everyone left the house. My owners left food with a neighbor and asked them to check on me but they forgot quite a bit of the time. I ended up being surrendered to GSRA when my owners put their house on the market.
I was pretty scared, until I met my foster family! I actually get to live inside the house with them. My foster mom is so proud of me – I was housebroken in two days and I have learned to walk nicely on a leash. I really enjoy obedience training. I don’t like being in a crate, but I have gotten to the point where I will lay down in it if you leave the door open. My foster family doesn’t confine me when they have to leave the house because I am not destructive. I have learned so much during my stay! My energy level is pretty high and I will need a family who will do things with me. I love taking walks in the park each day and playing ball! If you hold your hand out to me, I will gently place the ball in your hand to throw it and then I will bring it back for more. Oh! And be careful opening a car door around me – I will likely jump in because I love to go for rides.
There are two other GSD’s in my foster home. I get along great with the male GSD. He is a happy, low-key kind of guy and doesn’t mind if I boss him around some. The female GSD and I don’t see eye to eye, though. We are both a bit bossy, but that is how it goes! Because of this, my foster mom thinks I would do well either as an only dog or with a docile large breed male companion.
Since I have been with my foster family, I have gotten a bit protective of them. (Hey – isn’t that my job?). Because of this, I can be a bit growly if someone I don’t know comes up to one of my family members when I am around. My foster parents correct me when I do this, but I will need a family who will help me remember that I am responsible to my family, not for them!
