~8 years old.  Good with dogs and cats.  Kids TBD.  Good for seniors/elderly

So I get this call one afternoon that a local shelter has a senior male shepherd that’s in rough condition with possible mange and an eye infection. Thing is they tell me despite all this he’s so good natured and well behaved but that he’ll never get adopted because people want the “young, pretty dogs”. So what do we do? We go get him of course, I walk into the kennel area and here’s this poor dog laying there looking up at me with despair like “what now”? He looked like he had given up on humanity all together and was just awaiting his fate, it took some real encouragement for him to even gather the will to get up to greet me and see what was going on. Well once we walked him out of the shelter he brightened right up, jumped in the truck like he’d been doing it his whole life and you could tell he was so excited he was having trouble containing himself. His first night he got introduced to 5 other dogs and the bathtub, boy did he smell. He wasn’t too crazy about it but he let me scrub him down and man did he feel better once we were done. Next up was a vet appointment to find out what was going on with his skin, his coat is in horrible shape, very sparse and coarse and his skin had an odor to it, much like when a dog is left outside and not cared for or fed well. The vet felt like it was a combination of a flea allergy and poor environment so we got some medication and more baths (oh joy!) and he’s doing so much better. Now it’s a matter of time and patience and he’ll be that beautiful boy he once was and still is on the inside.

This is Archie, his story is like so many others out there and I’m so glad we were able to help him. Now that we have him on the mend he needs a FUREVER home with someone who can love and dote on him for the rest of his years. The shelter said he was a senior and by the way he looked he could pass for one, but the vet said he thought he was probably in the 8 year old range, not so senior by our standards. He is full of life and just a total comedian, he loves to take things you set down, he’s curious as a young pup with some things and he even likes to get in the shower once I get out in the morning. Not sure what that is all about, he’s not crazy about baths but hey, to each his own. He loves to sleep and hang out on the couch with you
He is great with other dogs, not alpha but not totally submissive either and he just adores people and craves attention. He’s great in the house, he can be crated but he can also be left out with free reign. He does stick to me like glue, I think he’s afraid of being abandoned again so he’s always a half step behind me wherever I go. He doesn’t like being outside by himself and will scratch at the door to be let in unless you’re outside with him. He loves to ride and he walks pretty well on a leash. I don’t have a cat but when we tested him at the shelter he went right up to one and when she hissed he about turned his self inside out getting away so I’d say he should be fine with cats. I have not tested him with children but can’t imagine him having any issues unless he inadvertently knocked one over, he can get excited and jump on you which is something we’re trying to break. Archie would be perfect for almost any family , he’s not overly energetic but does want to play with my other dogs so a companion animal would be a bonus for him. He mostly just wants love and attention from his humans.

Archie is neutered, up to date on vaccines and preventatives, and heartworm negative.
