(8yrs old) Good with dogs and older considerate children. Cats TBD

This is Nick, a handsome 8 yr YOUNG bi colored GSD.  This is the second time that he has been at the same shelter.  The first time was in 2007.  He was at the shelter this time for a month and was not adopted due to his age.  His time was up, so GSRA swooped in to rescue him.  The fact that he remained at the shelter for a month is a testament to how much the staff thought of him.  This dog is amazing!  Someone in his prior life obviously spent some time with him.  He knows basic obedience commands, crates like a dream but is completely trustworthy in the house, is house broken, knows how to use a dog door now, gets along well with my 3 GSD's, and LOVES his people. He is very gentle with children and respectful of other dogs and their space.  His primary focus is his people, and he just absolutely thrives on attention.  Why this dog was surrendered is a mystery to me since his temperament is so wonderful, but from what I can gather, his past owner was going to be brought up on neglect charges, so they did not reclaim him.  He was tattooed and microchipped before entering rescue.



Nick is very smart, and would do best in a home that can keep him channeled with direction.  He is one of the easiest dogs that I have fostered, and is almost perfect from the get go.  He will need a strong leader, as all GSD's do, and he will be a breeze to further train since he is so treat motivated.  He already knows sit, down, stay, leave it, come, shake, speak, and knows to sit before he gets his food and before he can go for his walks.  He walks well on a leash, travels like a dream in the car, and is NOT storm or fireworks phobic.  I feel that he would do best with a companion animal or a work from home person.  



He is VERY spry for a dog his age!  He absolutely loves a tennis ball and will zip around the yard for a very long time.  In fact, you will get tired before he does- LOL.  The almost perfect part of his behavior is  due to his obsession with a tennis ball.  He chews on it quickly, and I believe when he is stressed, turns to the ball for comfort.  He will  jump in the air to get it if thrown to him, will nudge it with his nose to entice you to play, and will speak upon command. When it is time to quit playing, you just need to sit down and tell him enough and he will get the message that ball playing needs to stop.  We are working on this with him.  Otherwise, he would be the tennis ball energizer bunny!



He is a smaller build GSD, and could stand to put on at least 10 lbs, and with that, he will still be very lean.  Since he is about 8, it will be best to keep him lean.  He has no hip problems and showed good extension on vet examination.  He gets up without any problems, and shows no signs of any arthritis.  He is so cute with the little energetic bounce to his step.  I can't help looking at him and smiling since he is so happy and carefree, even considering the past life that he had.  Since he came in so underweight, his coat is still wiry , but a beautiful color, and is getting better each week.  He is allergic to fleas, so continued maintenance with Frontline is a must.  He is heart worm negative, neutered, up to date on all his shots, and overall very healthy.

At about the three week mark, Nick has tried to herd one of the small children in our neighborhood.  He is not mean about it, but lets them know to correct what he perceives is bad behavior.  This has only happened to one child but on two separate occasions, both times the child was in motion close to him, and both times outside.  This same child has never been herded inside of our house.  For this reason, I would recommend that Nick not go to a home with small children.  We have a nine year old child and he has shown her nothing but kindness and respect.  He has not herded any other children and we have had several different children over. 

Nick is really a wonderful dog and will make a great addition to most families.  Please don't let the fact that he is a senior deter you.  He acts like he is a 3-4 yr old dog, and has the wonderful disposition that senior GSD's are famous for!
