Hello world!!! Trooper is ready to get out and meet his new family!!

Lets start with the good news:

Trooper is a fun-loving and happy boy who had a very rough start to life, but is now ready to move on and find a forever home. Trooper is a very friendly boy who adores people. Trooper is approximately 2 years old, and weighs about 75 pounds. He has a very pretty black and cream coat, and beautiful expressive eyes. He loves to prance around and interact with his people. Trooper likes to vocalize, and will give a happy yodel or bark when he is trying to communicate. He loves belly rubs, and is very thrilled when he gets attention. He has some interest in the tennis ball, but has not quite figured out the "fetch" concept!! Trooper does very well with other dogs, and just wants to play. He seems fine with cats (he has met them on a few occasions, and does not seem to want to hurt them. He might chase if they run, but no ill intent involved). Trooper rides well in the car, and gets very excited when he gets to go on field trips. Trooper is going to make someo ne very happy with his friendly and goofy personality.

Now for the not so good news:

Trooper came to GSRA back in May. He was in a rural shelter in very bad shape. He was thin, suffering from mange, had very swollen and bleeding paws, and was HW positive. His paws were swollen to 3 times their normal size. Poor guy was in so much pain he could barely walk. However, in spite of his discomfort, he demonstrated the sweetest personality. Trooper has been to the vet many times. (His story is on our Facebook page). Trooper has demodex mange...it is not contagious to other dogs or people. Trooper responded well to initial treatments, and his coat and skin recovered quickly. His HW condition was successfully treated. His paws have been an ongoing issue. He had several severe infections in his paws which took a while to resolve. His paws continued to swell, so GSRA had him seen by the specialists at NC State Vet School. In a nutshell, he has the demodex mange in his feet, and has been going for weekly dips to try and cure it. The specialist says that there is a 50% chance that the dips might resolve the issue entirely. However, we were told that there is also the possibility that his immune system is just not strong enough, and he may still continue to have ongoing issues. Trooper may require doses of Ivermectin for the duration of his life as a maintenance dose to keep the mange in check if he continues to have flare ups. We will not know if he is fully cured until some time after the medicated dips are stopped. Trooper needs a family that is understanding of this medical possibility, and is committed to ensuring that he be kept on a regimen of Ivermectin if needed, and Metiban dips if his feet don't respond. Again, he may end up totally cured, but, by the same token, could still have ongoing issues with the mange.

Trooper is a very special boy, and is so thrilled with life. He is going to make a great addition to some lucky family. I have really enjoyed fostering him. He may require a bit more "maintenance" then the average dog, but he is well worth it!!
