~3 years old.  Good with Dogs and Kids.  Cats TBD.

Please welcome our new sweet little tripod baby, Layla, to the rescue. She was rescued from a very noisy shelter and required extra TLC in the bathing department. Now you can see her beautiful coat and sweet sassy looks. We do not know how she lost her front right leg, but she handles her situation very well.
Layla is a sweet, gentle, and petite lady who loves everyone and knows no stranger. She is gentle around children and other animals showing no aggression, only curiosity and a love for attention. She is calm in the house and completely house trained. Layla is a typical Velcro shepherd who only wants to please and be near you.
She knows some commands and is learning new ones very quickly. So far she knows: sit, down, stay, stop, easy, wait, and up. Food is the perfect motivator for this lady. Right now tuna is the best!!! Her leash manners are improving daily and she does great one on one. She will pull if excited to meet another dog, person, or finds a smell she just can't resist. (This is improving each day.) Layla is very strong but can be knocked off balance so care is needed with pushy children or dogs.

She is slightly underweight and needs to build up her endurance, but 3 to 4 meals a day (temporary) is doing wonders. Currently, we take multiple short walks during the day, which is also helping her build muscle.

She can get up and down stairs with little help, but she does need to go at her own pace for balance. In general, she has a moderate activity level yet loves to play with other dogs.
I think her foster uncle described her best,

"Layla is like Yoda... smart, pitiful, and fragile looking upon first meeting her. Even non-intimidating and completely cuddly on the exterior, but.... let someone bring out another dog, big back yard, and a nylon Frisbee and it's on!!!  The Master Kung Foo Gymnastic Queen blooms into action!" (AKA Yoda Lady)
She can play tag, jump, flip in the air, and just flat out run any dog in a short race hands down! However, Layla doesn't last long and takes breaks often. Then she is back up and running.

Layla definitely has her mojo and charms so don’t let the three legs deter you from considering this perfect little lady. Her sweet temperament, moderate energy level, funny antics, and perfect house manners make her ideal for someone who loves German Shepherds, but can't keep up with a typical high energy shepherd.
Come by one of our events or set up a visit to see how special this little angel is.... you will see what I am bragging about. Besides, just look at those pictures and that cute face! Priceless. ;o)

05/23/12 Update

Oh my Layla.... this little girl has come so far in such a short time and I am so proud of her in every way.  She has gained great strength since first joining the rescue. Layla can now go up and down stairs without any assistance and without taking a break half way up or down. YAY for Miss Layla! She still can't run any marathons and prefers short walks, but hey... you try hopping a mile and see if you don't get tired even in the best of shape!

Layla is all around perfect! Her only question is..... why hasn't anyone considered her as their newest fur baby?

More about Layla

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids, Good with Adults, Good for Seniors/Elderly, Quiet, Apartment OK, Prefers cool climate, Playful, Eager To Please, Needs a companion animal

Special Needs: Does require minor assistance getting in the back of SUV's or trucks with a slight push of the booty. She can go up and down stairs, but if the stairs are really long or steep, then a harness going down the stairs (giving slight resistance) helps control her speed. She prefers soft fluffy beds for comfort on her shoulder and patience when she is tired. All of these things are definitely manageable and minor compared to the love you receive in return.
