(10 yrs old) Good with dogs, cats and older considerate kids. Good for seniors and apartment appropriate. Breed experience needed.

Meet Rocky!  Rocky's owners left him at the vet to be euthanized because he wasn't as spry as he once used to be.  The owners signed euthanization papers, and then left!  Seeing this magnificient dog, the staff was horrified by their callous actions and immediately called us.  Well you know GSRA, they would never leave seniors behind!

Rocky is a very large, extremely handsome dude. He weighs 100 lbs, and he is not overweight!   One look at him and you would never guess he was almost 11 years old.  He is good with people, older considerate children, cats, and other dogs.  Rocky wants nothing more than to be with his people.  He will look to you for direction.  Just because he is a senior doesn't mean that he should not follow the same rules as any other GSD.  He will need a leader to follow and give guidance.  Rocky adores my nine year old daughter, but should not go to a home with very young children since he may unintentionally knock them down due to his large size.  At this stage of his life, he does not need to be challenged by a strong alpha dog.  He just wants to live and let live! He would be perfectly content to be an only dog, or he can share his family with other respectful dogs.  He should not go to a home with a young energetic dog since this type of dog has a desire to rough house, and Rocky is very content to be left alone by his pack mates.  He has gotten along very well with my three GSD's and is extrememely respectful of them.  He avoids their direct path and will walk around them.  He is now starting to want to play with them outside, and is showing a real interest in playing with toys. He loves to go for his walks, will sit, lay down, give you his paw and switch paws, sit before being allowed to go for his walks, and leave it.  Such a polite gentleman! He is VERY smart, so further training will be easy.  He likes to go for car rides, but being such a big guy, may need help getting in a SUV due to the heighth off the ground.   He is housetrained and crate trained, but is trustworthy in the house left uncrated. At night sometimes he likes to sleep in his crate with his door open, or lie on a nice comfy dog bed. He should go to a home that is single story or has the master bedroom on the ground floor.  As he continues to age, it could become more difficult for him to navigate stairs, and he wants nothing more to be with his owners.

Rocky does have arthritis, which is perfectly normal and expected for a dog his age.  He is on medication for that, which until he entered the rescue, was not on for maintenance.  In his medical records, it states that he is afraid of storms.  We have not seen this yet since it is winter.  Rocky is neutered, HW negative, and up to date on his vaccinations.  He will be microchipped before adoption.

I will say that fostering this sweet senior boy has been a true joy.  I look at the wonderment on his face at times, and am truly blessed that he has been a part of our lives, which he has enriched in the short time that he has been with us!  Please consider letting a senior GSD into your life, and if Rocky is not for you, then consider another senior.  They exhibit the maturity, wiseness, respect, and majestic aura that goes along with this magnificient breed.
