German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Young
(2 yrs old) Good with older considerate kids and dogs. Not good with small dogs, cats TBD 10/13/2011 Update: Joe has been with us now for several weeks and is learning nicely how to live indoors. He’s still working on his manners but has made considerable progress since his first day. He already knows basic commands like sit and down, and can give an awesome high five. Joe is smart as a whip and learned the first day how to “wait” for his food until told “ok”. He’s also getting very good at waiting at the door before walks or playtime instead of just bursting through. He does tend to boredom bark but is easily corrected and this isn’t a problem if he gets enough exercise. Joe wants so badly to do the right thing, he just needs someone to show him what that is. Joe is big cuddler and would love to be able to snuggle up next to you on the couch (but if not he would happily lie at your feet as long as you give him belly rubs!)He is fully crate trained and has never had an accident in the house. Joe is a high energy dog and needs a family that is willing to commit to giving him the exercise and constructive discipline he needs to continue becoming the awesome GSD we know he is. And speaking of exercise, this boy was born to run! If you happen to be looking for the best running buddy ever, then Joe is your dog! Joe absolutely loves going for runs (sometimes I think he prefers it to walking :) and does so with a huge smile on his face. Luckily this is a great outlet for all that energy he has. He is an excellent dog on walks and heels very well on leash, as long as you don’t let him get away with pulling too much! He loves to greet everyone he sees – strangers, kids, dogs… they’re all Joe’s friends! He also LOVES the water and going for swims. Joe does have a high prey drive and will chase a squirrel or cat but is quickly mastering “leave it” when on leash and won’t pull your arm off trying to chase it. He’s also been working hard at learning his doggy manners. Joe doesn’t have a mean bone and gets along great with his foster brother. They love to play tug of war with their squeaky toys, chew on some good rawhide, and howl at passing fire trucks. But he likes to play hard, which is fine with his big GSD brother, but other dogs don’t always appreciate such boisterous moves. He probably would do best with a more confident alpha dog who’s willing to show him the ropes. It’s pretty incredible how sweet and trusting Joe is with people, especially considering his past. He is one of the sweetest, most affectionate dogs and just wants to be with his people and please them. He’ll stop anything and everything for a little love and affection and totally melts in your arms as soon as you start to pet him. So if you’re looking for a beautiful, sweet-tempered, active best friend who will happily keep up with you on all your adventures, Joe would love to meet you! I would like to introduce you to Joe. Joe came to us from not so great a "home." He has spend almost all his life on the end of a chain. He was not always given food or water. He was never exercised properly. He just sat outside and existed. A good neighbor saw Joe and made plans with the rescue to retrieve him. He has moved around a little bit finding the right foster home for him. He has had a lot of energy and little manners. However, Joe loves everybody, and he learns more every day. He does like to get on the couch and bed (I doubt he ever knew something so comfy ever existed). Also, he does not always like to go outside alone. I think he doesn't know whether he will ever be let in again. He does like to get attention by stealing things so I have to be careful with shoes and remote controls. He gets so much better every day, though. He just needs some time, love and someone willing to be patient with him and show him what a stable home is.
