(1-2 yrs old) Good with kids, dogs, and cats.

Coal is an absolutely spectacular all around dog! He adjusts well to everything and takes life in stride. He is completely trustworthy in the house and has made our home his castle promptly patroling the perimeter of our fenced in yard and securing the interior with a menacing bark and obscure presence. Coal was in a high kill shelter near the NC beach and when I saw his pictures I just had to meet him.  After a long drive I found him quiet, scared and a shell of a dog with a temperament and spirit so calm and sweet. He gently laid his head against the shelter worker's leg and then propped his head on the man's lap and looked up at me with sad, soulful eyes.  Since that day Coal has showed no change in his temperament. When we got home I found out how sick he was with Pneumonia and severe sores all over his feet and pads which bled for days with a severe infection but with some medicine and lots of TLC he is completely blossoming into the magnificent, sparky, regal dog he has the potential to be.  He gets along GREAT with our 5 month old female GSD and our 8 year old female as well. He loves my young children, ages 3 and 7 and lets them cuddle all over him. Did I mention he is a LOVE BUG and CUDDLER?  He is extremely attached to his people, preferring us over just about everything and follows me all over the house. He loves his person so much he will fight the water hose for you and literally drink your bath water :0)

He is crate trained, although he can be somewhat apprehensive about going in, but will sit quietly.  He is a DREAM on the leash, he just prances right beside you and people "gawk" as they ride by. Coal is the kind of dog you just want to love and there is NO doubt he will love you in return. He would love to sleep in the bed with his person and lounge on the sofa!  He loves playing in the backyard and just running around with a deflated soccer ball in his mouth. He is outstanding in the house and will settle very well. He eats great right next to our dogs and welcomes petting even while eating. He rides very nice in the car and just prefers to sit and lay by your side with an occasional pet on the head.  Because we suspect he is a Belgian Malinois, he will need a fenced yard.  He would love a family who is active, someone who runs or loves walking. He will need an experienced owner as Coal is a total Belgian Malinois outside in the yard partroling and carrying a toy around but is a laid back - I want to snuggle with you dog indoors.  He needs the exercise that a large yard can provide and he seems to enjoy the company of our female GSD.  I often refer to them as the "wonder twins" since they are both black!  Coal is a very submissive male!  He seems to just go with the flow and interacts very well with small dogs, big dogs and cats. He is a very rare dog as most Belgian's are not black.  I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon him and have  been in a position to foster him. Coal is great with men or women and kids.  When he is in the yard, he is all business and just wants to run with his ball, kinda an independent guy, but the minute you decide to walk away, he is right there with you.  He does not have super recall when he is in "play with my deflated ball" mode, but in the house and on lead, he is YOUR man!  Coal is young, UTD on all vaccinations, neutered, and heartworm negative.  I honestly feel that Coal's story falls along the lines of havng once been very loved by a military family who quickly ran out of time and a means to relocate him and they ended up dumping him in hopes someone would pick him up, well that someone was Animal Control and without GSRA, he would be at Rainbow Bridge.  Coal is one of the best well rounded dogs I have had the pleasure of fostering, so fill out that application and make Coal your companion!

A special note:

I have collaborated with ABMC to garner as much information as possible about Coal.  From my collective efforts it appears that there are solid black Belgian Malinois.  They are exclusive to Holland and France.  Specifically I found... "if the groenendael produced a short coat would it be a black Mal or a short-coated groenendael – it would be a black Malinois.   People must remember that most of the European kennels do not breed the way we do here in the U.S.   When they breed the varieties they do mix them on occasions and can at anytime produce a Terv out of a BSD or Malinois litter and so forth and so on."
