Update 2/17/11: Since Baltasar has spent a couple of weeks now with our family, he has become much more gentle playing with our dogs! He has learned how to interact appropriately and has blossomed into a well rounded dog!
Hi, meet Baltasar. He is one of the newest handsome mixed GSD's. Baltasar is a German name meaning "protected by God", and that is what this dog has been! He was an owner surrender, why I do not know. The great people at Scotland Humane Society kept this boy in their shelter for almost 3 months. He was heart worm positive, which has already been treated by the GSRA, but because of his prior heart worm status, made him undesirable to adopt. These wonderful people kept him for all of this time, which is very rare for a shelter to do. This says a lot about his personality and his nature. This is why I feel that this dog has been protected, because he has a much greater purpose. That purpose is to be a wonderful pet for someone! Could that be you?
Baltasar is about 2 1/2 years old, a big boy, who has a very sweet disposition. His mother was supposed to be an AKC registered black and tan GSD, and his father was a white GSD. I think there must have been some lab mixed with the white GSD, because when I look at him, he also looks a little like a lab. Mixes make wonderful dogs since they have a lot of the wonderful traits of the GSD, and also a gentle temperment of a mix. He is very good with other dogs, very gentle around children, and would be an 80 pound lap dog if you would let him! I would love for Baltasar to go to a family, since he thrives on the family interaction and loves children. He had no guidance or structure as a pup in his former home, which was admitted by his prior owner , so he is learning obedience, how to share his toys, and how to interact with a family. He has grown SO much in the week that he has been here. He knows sit, leave it, come, walks very well on a leash, rides great in a car, will sit for his food and wait his turn, lie down (about 50% of the time), will sit before being allowed to go out for his walks, and we are working on stay. He loves toys, and is a very playful dog. He will need someone who can continue to give him structure and continuity, guidance, love, patience, and stability. These are things that all dogs need! He is crate trained, house trained, and has now learned how to use our dog doors. Not bad for one week! He is VERY food motivated, so continued training will be easy. He wants nothing more than to be loved, and has a very strong desire to please his people. He is up to date on all his shots, micro chipped, neutered, and in good health, and was treated for heart worms on 2/3 and 2/4. Now, he just needs to recooperated for a little bit and he will be ready for his forever home!
Since Baltasar spent so much time in a shelter, he has stored up energy which he needs to burn. Daily walks and play time are a must, and this will help strengthen the bond between him and his new owner. He loves to play with my two GSD's, but can play rough at times, like most boys do! He would thrive in a household that already has a dog since he loves to play so much. He loves everyone and everything! Cats are TBD since we do not own any.
