German Shepherd Dog : : Male (neutered) : : Young
( 2 years old) Say hello to Chester, because he would certainly like to say hello to you! Chess has never met a stranger, as they say, either human or canine—all are treated like long-lost buddies. Chester is a large, athletic, playful young boy, happy to play with people, other dogs, or just alone with his toys. And he does like toys, especially balls and squeekie toys; or better yet, a squeekie ball! He’s also very, very smart, learning things not only from me and the other dogs, but also from watching how the other dogs and I interact. He watches and listens, and responds well to correction. He’s house trained and crate trained, although after the first few days he proved himself trustworthy enough to be left uncrated. He does have a few rough edges to be smoothed out. The most significant one is leash manners. He’s big and strong and enthusiastic about walks, but the concept of walking with someone is brand new to him. We’re making progress on this, but anyone considering Chester for adoption should be committed to on-going training on leash walking and other basic obedience skills. However, given Chester’s smarts, I think he has huge potential for achieving a high level of training in a yet to be determined field—maybe agility, maybe tracking, maybe therapy work. If you have experience or interest in one of these areas and are looking for a dog to work with, please consider Chester. But if a best bud for all of life’s adventures is what you’re after, Chester fits the bill there, too. Chester will be starting heartworm treatment in mid-July and available for adoption in late August.
