UPDATED 7/7/2010: Uli (pronounced "ooli") has been with us 9 months. During that time she has really blossomed! When she first came into the rescue she was very reliant on her sister Ursa (who has since been adopted and is now living the high life!!). Realizing that Uli needed to learn to trust herself and those around her (other than Ursa) we separated the girls and kept Uli with us while Ursa moved onto another foster home. At first Uli was devastated by this, but over time she realized that there was life and safety outside of Ursa :) She learned to play with her canine foster brothers and sisters and she grew to love and trust us, her foster Mom and Dad. To see Uli now, in her foster home, you would never guess that she was once a terrified, shy almost wild little girl. She obeys commands, plays like a fiend with the other animals, crates like a dream and is one of the BIGGEST cuddle bugs you will ever meet. As much as Uli loves living with us though, we know there is a home out there that will suit her better than us, and will help her to continue to flourish and enjoy all that life has to offer. This home would be with people who are experienced working with shy dogs. As much as you want to shelter them and not take them out of their comfort zone they need to be pushed into experiencing new things. Every time Uli has had to face a challenge she has come out of it being just a little bit more self assured! She needs a quiet home - one where she can become comfortable and confident in the daily routine and boundaries. Uli does not do well with visitors to the home. This may change over time, but for now, she is not quite sure of new people coming into her house. She is never, ever mean but she will bark to let people know that she is nervous. For this reason, we feel a home without young children or constant visitors would be better for her. Uli LOVES to play with other dogs, so a young canine companion (or 2) is a must! Uli is wonderful with both male and female dogs and enjoys running and chasing like no other dog we have ever met. Therefore, Uli's forever home MUST have other dogs with which she can play and learn from. Uli's other joys in life are food and water..pretty much in that order. Coming from a background where she was starved and neglected, Uli has never gotten over her love affair with food. She still eats as though each meal might be her last! She is also prone to counter surfing when you aren't looking! Among her many talents is the ability to pull bowls and plates (and silverware!) out of the sink without breaking a single thing! She will then take her treasures to her crate or her dog bed and lick them positively clean! I'm sure I don't even have to describe what happens when a pizza is inadvertently left on the kitchen counter!! When Uli isn't eating, and when the weather is warm, you will find her lying in her personal dog pool. This dog LOVES water! If the body of water is big enough she will swim and swim and swim. If all she has is a wading pool, she will splash and bite at the water and eventually lay down and just soak herself. Needless to say, this is one dog that you never have to wrestle with when it comes to bath time! You simply show her the tub and in she jumps! There's a lot I could write about Uli, but really, all any potential adopter needs to understand is that she is a special, sweet free spirit of a dog. She needs a home and a family that understands this. She doesn't fit the mould of any dog we have known - she is truly an original! So, while she may never be a dog-park dog, or a social butterfly that welcomes all and sundry to your house, she possesses within her a very unique personality that is best enjoyed one on one within a peaceful setting.
