ROONEY ~11 months old. Good with kids and dogs. Cats TBD.
GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.
Rooney is a young, probably Malinois/ Shep Mix.
She is super smart and in the short while we have had her, she is already learning to sit, go down, give us her paw, spin, touch... She is a very happy, active dog who is a cuddle bug.
Rooney came to us after being picked up by Animal Control and taken to a county shelter. She was at the shelter for at least 3 weeks and, during that time, was confined to a 2 X 6 kennel. Needless to say, when Rooney was sprung, she had a LOT of pent-up energy!! Rooney is still working on gaining some much-needed pounds, but despite this, she is a compact, strong, healthy, shepherd dog. She has adapted to life as a house dog really well. She sleeps in our bedroom and is very quiet during the night. We did crate her to begin with and she exceptional at sleeping in a large crate overnight without crying or having any accidents.
Rooney is doing really well learning to walk on a leash. We are working on this as well as other commands such as “come”. Like many shepherds and Malinois, Rooney tends to be more independent in her thinking, but the longer she is with us, and the more she bonds to us, she is settling down and doing so much better at following our guidance. We make sure to take Rooney to lots of different places to expose her to new people and situations. She loves traveling in the car and she LOVES swimming. She is pretty fearless and friendly to pretty much all dogs she meets. She is very happy in most situations. Very impressive for a young dog.
Rooney has a good prey drive so, for the moment at least, would be best in a home without chickens, cats, or bunnies. She tested well with both male and female dogs at the shelter and loves playing with her canine foster siblings. One of them is even a very small dog!
If you are an adult home, and want to laugh and have fun, especially outside, Rooney is a good match for this lifestyle. She LOVES and cherishes people and is completely exuberant in her spirit for life. She is really not a hard dog with a lot of baggage. Rooney would flourish if you are interested in taking group dog classes w/her. She really tries to please. She is very bright and a true pleasure to be around. You won't be able to keep yourself from smiling with her around.
PLEASE NOTE: It
is GSRA policy that we do not adopt dogs under the age of 1 year to families with children under the age of 8 years old.
