JOHNNY~7 years old. Good with dogs and older, considerate children. Not good with cats.

GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only.

Johnny’s full name is Johnny B. Goode because he be a VERY good dog! Or for the Grammar Police among us, he IS a very good dog. :-) Johnny is friendly to people and dogs of all sizes, and is quite social—in fact, his goal at the recent GSRA Reunion Picnic seemed to be to meet ALL the people and ALL the dogs. :-) He also has lovely house manners—housetrained, non-destructive, comfortable in or out of a crate.

To meet Johnny is to want to take care of him, as he trustingly greets you and buries his head in your lap for a snuggle. And if ever a dog needed caring for, it is Johnny. Johnny came to GSRA after an early life that clearly hadn’t treated him well. Found as a stray and taken in by Good Samaritans who contacted GSRA, he was weak, malnourished, covered in fleas and ticks, and had flystrikes on his ears that speak of life lived as an outside dog. But somehow still SO sweet and friendly, with a gentle spirit that just shines out of him.

Since coming into the GSRA fold, he has gained weight nicely and is holding steady at a healthy 85 pounds. This is a good maintenance weight for him since he has significant hip dysplasia, partially accounting for his overall weakness when he was found. But an equal contributor was his complete lack of muscle mass! With daily walks, gentle games of fetch, and a lot of TLC, he has become much stronger.

Johnny's mobility has greatly improved, but he still struggles to get his feet under him after lying down on a slick surface such as a tile or hardwood floor. Strategically placed rugs are a big help. It’s probably safe to say that a home with few stairs would be best for Johnny.

The other thing Johnny needs in an ideal home is people who are around much of the time and will commit to daily walks, which he absolutely loves. He walks very well on a leash and is quite happy walking (and sometimes even trotting!) alongside his foster sister. He’s good with children, but because of his size, should be supervised around small children. He enjoys the company of other dogs so could live happily as an only dog or in a multidog home. But he’s more of a “people dog” than a “dog dog,” so if in a multidog home, he’d view the other dog as a companion rather than a play buddy.

Johnny's sweet disposition, gentle nature, and personable approach make him quite skillful at stealing hearts in a short amount of time. f you think your home would be a good fit for him, he’d be happy to meet you now and give you a snuggle.
