German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Female (spayed) : : Adult
ZIVA ~2-3 years old. Not good with kids. Dogs and cats TBD. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Hello all! Let me introduce you to the wonderful Miss Ziva. Ziva is a very striking 2 to 3-year-old German Shepherd. She is a classic black and tan, with very expressive eyes. She is about 60 to 65 pounds. She has a very distinctive mask and looks like she has an extra layer of eyeliner around her eyes. It contributes to her rather intense look, but if she’s looking at you with adoration it’s quite endearing. We do not know a lot about her past. Ziva was surrendered to a local shelter, and her prior owner said that he just did not have time for her anymore. Ziva was very overwhelmed and scared at the shelter and it took a couple of weeks for the staff to win her trust. It appears that she was not well socialized or exposed to very much in her earlier life. Ziva has made tremendous progress since coming into the rescue and acclimating to her foster home. When she gets to know you, she is the most devoted dog and loves attention. A true Velcro dog. She will follow you around the house, and happily snuggle with you on the couch if you let her. She loves to lay beside you and flip upside down for belly rubs. She also has discovered dog toys. She will take a stuffed toy and happily prance around the house wagging her tail and squeaking it. She looks very proud of herself when she does this and she always brings it up to me and acts like she wants me to take it and throw it for her. Ziva’s favorite Thing in the whole world is to play fetch with a tennis ball. She is just delighted with the tennis ball. If you have two tennis balls that is great, but if you only have one, she will bring it back and drop it out when you tell her to. She will anxiously wait for you to throw it again. Ziva would love someone who will play ball with her at least once or twice a day. It is the highlight of her day. She is quite an athletic girl and loves the extra challenges of catching the ball when you bounce it off the side of the house or the fence. She has a great intensity and focus. Ziva knows how to sit although she seems a little rusty. She comes when called and seems very eager to engage and try to please her person. I think training will be easy with her. Ziva is also crate trained and housebroken. She loves her crate. Sometimes she will actually get off the couch and put herself back in the crate. I think it is her safe spot. She is also a relatively quiet dog. She does not bark unless there is a reason to. If someone knocks on the door, she knows what to do and she has a big bark. She is, mostly a quiet dog. She is extremely food motivated as well. I do believe she is an alpha female. She has been out with several of her male foster brothers and done very well. She will happily engage in a game of chase and tag when they are out there together. I think she would do best as a solo dog or with a male dog close to her size. I know she sounds almost perfect, and she is a really fantastic dog, but she does have one issue that we are working on. She is fantastic once she knows you and trust you, but she is not a very social dog with strangers. She is fine walking around in public, but if someone comes within her 6 foot radius she gets very apprehensive. She seems more scared/reactive to men. She also seems uncomfortable around children. We are trying different methods to Help her build confidence and learned that people are not to be feared. Ziva would be great for someone who does not have a lot of company and does not want a social butterfly of a dog. She is very structure oriented and loves her yard and her crate. Someone who would engage with her and play ball and let her sit on the couch with you while you binge on Netflix or watch football would be heaven to her. Also, someone committed to taking her for walks and working on helping her over calm her fears to let her be all that she can be. Ziva is going to require a home with a fenced yard. She has a medium energy level. She will play if you are engaging with her, if not she’ll just run around for a bit and then she’s content to come back in. She will also be fine with A home where are her new owner works from home or works away from home. She is perfectly content sleeping in the crate for several hours at a time. She also appears to have considerable prey drive, so I home without kitties would be best. Ziva is a sweet and unique dog. If you are intrigued by her bio, please reach out for more information.
