Say hello to Gracie Mae, a large and lovely black and cream female sheppie. Gracie came to us when her previous owners’ health issues made it impossible for them to continue caring for her and they made the heartbreaking decision to surrender her to us to find her a new family. Gracie had lived her entire life with that family so was understandably confused to find herself in a foster home, but dogs are amazingly adaptable and she soon settled in once she saw that the new place offered a regular routine and a yard that needed patrolling for squirrels. Once she relaxed she proved to be quite a funny girl! When you give her a new precious object (toy or chewie) she manages it very carefully—hiding it, moving it from spot to spot, and going back to check on it periodically—never forgetting where she left it. She’s also a bug chaser, so it’s not unusual to see her dashing randomly around the yard and leaping into the air. You’ll get hours of entertainment from this girl, for sure. :-)

Gracie is very friendly to people, including children, and LOVES car rides—when we’re out walking she checks out every car we come across on the off chance she might be able to get inside and go for a ride. She has lovely house manners, takes treats gently, and is comfortable in a crate.

Does she have any flaws at all? Well not flaws, but definitely a few quirks that her forever home needs to be prepared to manage. She’s in excellent health overall but is carrying about 15 lbs too much weight to be healthy, and it’s important that her forever home share GSRA’s commitment to helping her lose it. She’s playful and active, so all she needs to get there is an owner who will show their love through attention, interaction, and portion control rather than treats. :-) Her social skills with other dogs are pretty clumsy. She would enjoy having a dog buddy but it would need to be the right sort of dog—one who will tolerate a certain amount of initial rudeness but is willing and able to show her where the limits are without escalating a tiff. I’m fortunate to have such a dog and she plays with him and seems to enjoy his company. But she would also be perfectly happy as an only dog as long as she had a lot of interaction with her people. We have not cat-tested her but she has a pretty high prey drive so would probably be a no-go for a home with kitties.

And then a final quirk about Gracie is that she gets anxious when handled by strangers, as has to happen when it’s time for a vet visit. With patience and the right approach she can get over this but we strongly recommend using a vet practice that is either Fear Free certified or that follows a similar approach to handling fearful dogs.
