MANFRED ~1 year old. Good with dogs. Kids TBD. Not good with cats.
GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only
Manfred is a "Bayou boy", hailing from the great state of Louisiana. We know this because at one time, someone cared about him and had him microchipped. Sadly though, somewhere along the line Manfred's life got turned upside down. He was found as a stray here in North Carolina and, even though he had his microchip, his previous owner's could not be found. So Manfred came from the Big Easy and ended up in the Big House (i.e. puppy prison!). Now we know he isn't your classical looking GSD, in fact, he might not even have any GSD in him - but one look at that fuzzy face and we knew we had to help him.
Manfred takes a little while to adjust to new environments and people, and we have found it's best to just let him do his thing and figure out for himself that he is safe. After a day or 2 he relaxes and then the true Manfred comes out! He is playful, affectionate, energetic and always good for a laugh. He likes to play one on one with female dogs but gets a little jealous if someone else tries to cut in on his action. For this reason we think he would do best with just one canine sister who loves to play and romp as much as he does. Manfred is a HUGE fan of kitties... as long as there is a side of hot sauce (he is, afterall, from Louisiana!). Yep - squirrels, cats, birds..anything small and quick- puts his prey drive into gear and you can't get his attention until the offending animal has left the county! Needless to say, Manfred will need a home without cats (and rabbits, and gerbils, and canaries.... you get the idea).
Manfred is a gentleman in the house and will happily settle on the couch with you to watch TV. He is also good about going into his crate when asked. He's easy on leash and a champ in the car. He listens well (except if there is any of the aforementioned critters in sight) and has a funny, somewhat quirky personality. Given that we really don't know what breeds he is made up of, it's hard to describe what he's like to be around. When he first gets somewhere, he shuts down and becomes aloof, kind of like a chow. However when he is comfortable in his surroundings he becomes goofy and playful like a Golden. He likes to talk a lot, so maybe there is some husky in there? Who knows? All we can say is you have to come meet this guy so you can understand why we all love him.
The ideal home for Manfred would be an adult's only home with a large, fenced in backyard (6 ft fence is needed as he's pretty athletic) with a fun-loving, large breed female dog. He will need a home that understands his initial mistrust of new situations and who will take things slow when introducing him to new people and places. Manfred is a seriously cool dude who will make you laugh with his enthusiasm for life. If you think you could give him the perfect home, submit an adoption app and tell them you are here to see the "Bayou boy".
Manfred is heartworm positive, and will need to be treated.
