German Shepherd Dog (medium coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Young : : Large
~3-4 months. Good with older considerate children and dogs. Cats TBD. GSRA adopts to residents of VA, NC, and SC only Every now and then we get a young puppy into the rescue....because sometimes a puppy is not for everybody! Such is the case with Toby! He was purchased by a young college student when he was just 6 weeks old...two days later she had the epiphany that she would not have adequate time for a puppy with her school schedule, so she reached out for help. Toby is a riot....although at six weeks old he should not have been away from his siblings.....the 4-8 week period is where puppies learn bite inhibition from playing with their siblings, and also from getting corrections from the mother dog. Fortunately, there was another fairly young puppy at the foster home, as well as a few adult females who have no problem giving a rambunctious puppy an appropriate correction. Toby is a typical GSD puppy! He is a ball of energy, and is working on developing his co-ordination. Toby is going to be BIG!!! Like a really BIG adult in out best guestimation. He is now 13 weeks old, and is a little over 30 pounds already. He has huge paws, and very thick hocks. I bet he will be close to or over 100 pounds when he finishes maturing. Toby adores his people, and in typical GSD fashion, he only wants to be near his person. Toby is going to need a family that will devote the time and energy to work with him on training and learning appropriate behavior. Toby is very friendly to everybody. His tail never stops wagging. He does try to jump up on you with enthusiasm, and he thinks that shoelaces are a great toy, especially when they are attached to your walking feet! He is going through the typical antics of a young puppy that is just entering the teething stage. Toby is crate trained and housebroken for the most part. He will not eliminate in his crate, and as long as you let him outside on a regular basis he will not have an accident. Toby thrives on structure and is a very smart boy. He rides well in the car and does not get carsick. Toby just wants to please and is a well rounded and happy boy. He is a bit of a goof at times, and one thing he likes to do is carry around his food bowl when it is empty. Toby loves playing with the other dogs, and is going to need a companion animal that will play with him and also one that is big enough to not be accidentally hurt by his silly puppy antics and clumsiness. He means well, but he can play a bit rough at times. He is not aware of how burly he is! Toby is growing by the day. His ears were floppy and folded over 6 weeks ago...in the past two weeks they have started changing. The ears are starting to try to stand, and are now doing the typical gsd puppy ear tricks. They may end up standing, they may not, but he is going to be a handsome boy no matter what. Toby is going to be very popular, and it is going to be difficult to decide which lucky family will get to adopt this sweet pup. I know there will be many super homes wanting him. It is going to be fun to watch him grow into a fine adult and give some lucky family years of love! It is GSRA policy that we do not adopt dogs under the age of 1 year to families with children under the age of 8 years old.
